It's the middle of winter, so who doesn't love staying toasty by sipping on a warm drink?

To me, part of eating real food means eating seasonally. In the summer, our bodies crave foods that keep our temperatures low to combat the heat, while in the winter we gravitate toward foods that keep our temperatures up to ward off the cold.

This time of year, my mug seems like it's almost always full of some kind of hot drink, be it coffee, tea, or a fun treat like a superfood latte.

That said, it can be all too easy to overindulge and get carried away in the cold weather when sugary drinks abound, like hot chocolate mixes or a Pumpkin Spice Latte from Starbucks. This roundup features some of my favorite pantry staples to keep on-hand, so you can make delicious and healthy hot drinks at home whenever you want!

Now – who else is ready to make a yummy and nourishing drink, snuggle under a blanket by the fire and binge a Netflix marathon?

Healthy Hot Drinks: Teas

I'm a huge fan of hot tea, both for the flavor and the INCREDIBLE health benefits. While I do struggle with caffeine in coffee, I'm able to drink caffeinated tea without any of those negative side effects, like racing heart and mind, jitters and nausea.

Over the past 10 years, more than 5,000 medical studies have been published on tea's health benefits, with over 1,000 of those focusing specifically on tea and cancer. In fact, the Harvard School of Public Health recommends drinking at least 3 cups of tea a day to achieve maximum health benefits. (source) So what are these health benefits?

  1. Immunity booster – Green tea is known to reduce the recurrence of cancer, and the National Institute of Health (NIH) shows that green tea is effective against many diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
  2. The NIH also shows that green tea boosts metabolism, promotes skin elasticity as well as teeth, nail and hair health.
  3. L-theanine, an amino acid found in tea, neutralizes the jittery effects of caffeine and creates an at once relaxed yet focused state (drinking tea actually produces some of the same chemical and neurological effects as going into a deep meditative state!).

Pique Tea

I just recently discovered Pique Tea and am fascinated by the way their crystals dissolve in cold and hot water, no tea bags required. Cool, right? Simply tear, mix and drink.

Matcha Green Tea has become a huge trending ingredient over the past couple of years. It can be an acquired taste – it's earthy, a little grassy and unlike anything else you've probably ever tasted. But what exactly is it?

Matcha is actually the only form of tea where the whole leaf is consumed (meaning that instead of just infusing water with tea leaves that get discarded, you’re drinking the actual leaves as you dissolve them in liquid). It promotes calm, relaxation and concentration and delivers more of the healthful elements of green tea than other forms (source).

I really love the idea of the turmeric drink right now because I could definitely use an anti-inflammatory after developing a knee injury at my half marathon a few months ago.
