With the temps warming up, we for one love nothing more than sitting in our backyards on a warm afternoon with our friends and family, enjoying delicious wine, cocktails and–of course–food!
But if you think drinking alcohol has to always be unhealthy, think again. There are creative ways to add nutrient boosts and superfoods into your mixed drinks, so you can enjoy relaxing with a cool cocktail, while simultaneously getting in your vitamins and minerals!
How to Make Superfood Frosé (aka Wine Slushies)
This Frose Recipe is easy and quick (perfect for hot summer days when slaving away in your kitchen is the last thing you want to do!).
Just toss frozen watermelon, frozen strawberries, organic rosé wine and lime juice in a blender along with a few added superfoods–namely, organic camu, goji and acai powders–and wahla, you're done!
We do recommend taking the time to cube the watermelon and freeze it ahead of time, as the texture is way better (much slushier) when using frozen versus fresh.
Sprouts sells watermelon pre-cut, which makes quick work of this. Just throw the box in the freezer the night before you plan to make this Frose.
Likewise, we recommend Bonterra organic rosé for this recipe (we get our through Dry Farm Wines!) as it's a convenient, affordable and healthier option.
We definitely recommend getting organic or at least natural and biodynamic wines whenever possible, as the health benefits are vastly different compared to conventional wine. Don't believe us? Check out this detailed post on why you should make the switch to healthier wines.
We also love Navitas Naturals, our favorite brand of superfoods. Their superfood powders are organic and nutrient-dense, making them the perfect addition to this frose recipe!
Health Benefits of this Superfood Frosé Recipe
Sure, you could make this frose recipe without adding superfood powders. But why miss out on all those health benefits when it's as easy as just adding two spoonfuls to the blender?
For this superfood frose recipe, we went with goji berries and camu camu powders.
Packed with protein, fiber and antioxidants, goji berries are nicknamed ‘The Happy Berries’ for the sense of well-being they provide. They are a true antioxidant powerhouse and contain more than 20 vitamins and minerals.
Ounce for ounce, goji berries contain more antioxidants than oranges, more Vitamin A than carrots, and more iron than soybeans and spinach. The taste is somewhere between a dried cherry, raisin, and cranberry – making it a killer compliment to rosé wine!
You may be less familiar with camu camu powder, which have a tart berry flavor and balance out the sweetness of this frosé.
The Camu Berry is one of the world's most bountiful sources of Vitamin C, with as much as 60 times more Vitamin C per serving than an orange. Talk about immunity boosting! Vitamin C also fights free radicals, which can lead to inflammation, disease and premature aging.
In addition to boosting your day-to-day immunity, this whole-food form of Vitamin C is ideal for added protection in times of change: flu season, air travel, periods of intense exertion, or even when you’re in the midst of a busy time at work or home.
So go ahead– get the best of both worlds by adding superfoods to your frozen wine slushy, and enjoy this delicious frosé all summer long!
