A healthy twist on bulletproof coffee, this butter coffee recipe can be made with grass-fed, unsalted butter or lactose-free ghee (or try coconut oil!). Loaded with health benefits, this butter coffee recipe also makes for the creamiest, dreamiest, most delicious cup of coffee I’ve ever had. Honestly, it tastes just like a latte, but without any dairy.

Ok, so full disclosure. I'm a morning tea drinker. I cannot escape my British roots and there are probably only a handful of days in my life that I can remember NOT starting my day with plain ol' orange peakoe with milk.

That said, I do LOVE my lattes later in the morning and for all those latte lovers (and morning coffee pot bee-liners) this post if for you!

This is My Butter Coffee Recipe with Ghee and Collagen.

Butter in coffee? Yes, you read that right—this recipe has you put a tablespoon of butter, or ghee in my case (which is a lactose-free clarified butter) in your coffee for the health benefits it provides. Intrigued?

Honestly, putting ghee in coffee tastes just like a latte, but without any dairy. It's amazing–just blend everything up in your Vitamix –order on Amazon here or buy direct here – and you've got a coffeehouse-style latte that's way better for you AND your wallet!

You're going to need a blender, because the butter or ghee should NOT be stirred directly into the cup of coffee. It won't mix right, and you're looking for that oh-so-smooth consistency.

Coffee, collagen, and ghee are the ingredients for Butter Coffee.

What is Butter Coffee?

The concept of butter coffee was first introduced by Dave Asprey, who dubbed it Bulletproof Coffee.

Bulletproof coffee has become increasingly popular over the years. It's especially popular for those following certain diet plan, like keto, and those simply wanting to improve their health. The idea behind bulletproof coffee is to provide a source of sustained energy that helps to reduce hunger and cravings throughout the day. The fats in the butter and MCT oil provide a sustained source of energy; avoiding any energy crashes. Additionally, bulletproof coffee can be used as part of intermittent fasting. It can help to reduce hunger and provide energy during a fasting period. If you're looking to lose weight or increase your energy levels, bulletproof coffee is a great option to try.

Butter Coffee Benefits

I know it sounds crazy to put butter or ghee in coffee, but I've got to tell you, it is DELICIOUS!! Think the creamiest, smoothest latte you've ever had… but with just one scoop of butter instead of a cup of milk.

And more than that, it's SO GOOD FOR YOU!

The benefits of butter coffee are far-reaching, particularly when you use grass-fed, organic butter.

Grass-fed cows are healthier than factory-farmed or grain-fed cows since their bodies are not made to digest grain. So, the butter they produce reflects their good health.

The benefits of grass fed butter:

  • Grass-fed butter is higher in omega-3 fatty acids and CLA than conventional butter. CLA may help to reduce tumors, lower cholesterol and high blood pressure, reduce inflammation, and actually lower body fat (source).
  • Grass-fed butter is higher in butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid, which can both prevent and decrease inflammation. Butyrate also acts as a detoxifier, improves colon health, supports healthy insulin levels. It may be helpful for individuals suffering from IBS, Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.
  • Grass-fed butter is more nutrient-dense. A single tablespoon of grass-fed butter contains 500 IU vitamin A, more carotenes than carrots, and is chockfull of vitamin K2, vitamin D, and vitamin E.

So don't be afraid of butter!!

While you can absolutely use grass-fed butter in this recipe, I actually recommend using grass-fed ghee instead. If you want to be completely vegan, you can also use coconut oil, which is really delicious, albeit slightly greasier. Here's why I put ghee in coffee:

Ghee in Coffee: Ghee vs. Butter

Instead of using grass-fed butter in my butter coffee, I opt for ghee, which is also an incredible option for high heat cooking!

Ghee is shelf stable (meaning you can leave it out on your counter without fear of it going bad), and there's one key difference between ghee and regular butter.

Butter = Milk Solids + Butter Fat + Water

Ghee = Butter – Milk Solids – Water

So ghee has all of the health benefits of grass-fed butter, but without the lactose and casein (milk solids).

As ghee is dairy-free, it's a brilliant option for anyone with allergies, gut issues or vegetarian leanings (source).

My absolute favorite brand of ghee is Fourth & Heart. It's sourced from a cooperative of grass-fed farms in New Zealand.

They've got five different flavors. All of which are made with real food ingredients (not natural or artificial flavors), and every single one tastes AMAZING.

For butter coffee, I usually go with original (which is unsalted) or the Madagascar Vanilla Bean, which adds a subtle, sweet vanilla flavor to coffee that is irresistible!

Balance Hormones with this Butter Coffee Recipe

Healthy fats can do wonders for your hormonal health. Eating sources of healthy fats like ghee can balance your hormones, reduce inflammation, and improve overall health. Ghee, which is clarified butter, is rich in fatty acids and antioxidants, making it an ideal choice for hormone balance. If you choose grass fed ghee it will be rich in Omega-3 fatty to help balance hormones and reduce inflammation. Eating healthy fats like these can also help reduce cravings, improve digestion, and boost energy levels.

Ghee is also rich in Butyric Acid, which helps your gut digest foods. It also helps your body assimilate other nutrients when eaten in conjunction with ghee. In fact, in Ayurveda, herbs are often mixed with ghee to be more easily absorbed by the body.

This is why we also like to recommend adding things like maca powder and cinnamon. Adding these extras to this butter coffee recipe- means their health benefits will be even more powerful because of the ghee!

What are the effects of maca and cinnamon?


Maca root is an adaptogen and a member of the cruciferous family, like broccoli and cabbage. Its considered a superfood due to its positive effect on hormone balance, energy levels, and health. In fact, Maca Root benefits include increased fertility in both men and women, hormone balance and a boosted immune system. It has also shown to increase energy and stamina, improve sexual function, memory, and focus (source).

What is Collagen and Why I Put Collagen in Coffee with Ghee

We've talked before about the incredible health benefits of collagen–but here's a quick recap.

What exactly is collagen?

Collagen is a structural protein found in the human body that is responsible for maintaining the strength, shape, and structure of the skin, bones, and other connective tissues. It is the most abundant protein in the body, making up approximately 25-35% of the total protein content. Collagen is found in the bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments, blood vessels, and organs. It is also a major component of hair and nails. Collagen is a vital building block for the entire body and its production naturally declines as we age, which is why it's important to get enough of it in our diet. Dietary sources of collagen include fish, eggs, and dairy products, as well as leafy greens and legumes. Additionally, many people turn to supplements to get their collagen. Earlier this year, I switched to decaf coffee to see if cutting out caffeine helped with my anxiety. It worked like gangbusters, so now I enjoy this butter coffee recipe with decaf beans instead of regular. All this to say, either works! You do you.

I do recommend that whatever coffee you choose, you go for an organic bag. Organic coffee is far less acidic than regular coffee, making it easier to digest. My Butter Coffee Recipe with Ghee and Collagen

  • high speed blender



  • Make your coffee as you normally would.  (I recommend making in a French Press)
  • In a blender (I recommend Vitamix), combine coffee with ghee, collagen, maca, and cinnamon. Blend until smooth and everything is dissolved. The coffee will look like a latte with foam at the top.
  • Pour into a coffee mug and enjoy!



You can also use coconut oil instead of ghee, if preferred.
If you don't want to add collagen, maca, or cinnamon, you can just make a plain butter coffee with coffee and ghee/coconut oil, and leave out the remaining ingredients.

    1. Hi Kim! Yes, technically you’re right! Ghee is made from dairy. If you had a dairy allergy or were following a vegan diet then I wouldn’t recommend it. However, as most (if not all) of the dairy proteins and carbohydrates have been removed most people tolerate ghee really well! Thanks for sharing 🙂

  4. Wondering if anyone has tried this with a stick blender or frother? We have an RV we travel in and the vitamix isnt making the cut for items/weight limit.

    1. Have you tried the small ninja bullet , it works well for me — I ordered a $7 milk frothed from Amazon and it works well for me .. but I’m our other home we don’t have a frother and I tried the bullet o use for my

    I drink this ever morning too ! I used to buy bulletproof coffee – with ghee – with protein from the Whole Foods coffee shop, and it would cost me $7!! But I loved it and loved how it made me feel so felt it was worth it – now I make it myself at home and like the taste even better ! I put my coffee, ghee, coconut oil, and vital protien in my blender till frothy and drink it every morning! I love it so much. I see you don’t do coconut oil (in addition to ghee) do you think I’m getting too much saturated fat with both? Thanks xx

  8. I add some organic cacao power to my ghee and extra virgin coconut oil along with the vital peptides. I make my own I buy a big jar of coconut oil at Costco‘s and the Cacao powder at whole foods and order the vital peptides from Amazon and make my own self all of your suggestions I will and Saigon cinnamon To it. I love it that is my breakfast and it holds me over till lunch

    Thanks for starting your inspiring website. I also have PCOS and have been GF, DF, soy free for one year but have been struggling with giving up sugar! ???? This coffee recipe looks fab. Was just wondering if you drank coffee while on your gut healing protocol? Did it affect your blood sugar levels? Also did you give up all refined sugar during that healing year as well.     1. Hey Jacqui–so glad you found this recipe. I know that sugar is one of the toughest things for people to give up. I think a lot of it comes down to resetting your palette. I have always drank coffee throughout my journey, though these days I’m on decaf to help with anxiety. Coffee did not negatively affect my blood sugar levels, as it’s really the sugar you add to coffee that would do that. And I don’t add any sugar to mine. Try vanilla extract instead. I’ve never been much of a sweet tooth, but I do try to avoid refined sugar most of the time. I recently purchased a grass-fed ghee with coconut oil blend that I used instead with the cinnamon. I think I could get used to this! I plan on trying this with the ingredients you mention, too.
