Health is all about balance.

I've spent the past few years treating my health issues with stress management and natural remedies–and I've been successful! I've reversed all of my diagnosis, from PCOS and Leaky Gut (IBS) to Insulin Resistance and Hypothyroidism (see how I did it here!).

I'm a firm believer in green smoothies. One of the most powerful habits I adopted years ago was drinking a daily green smoothie.

No matter what else I ate that day, how long or non-existent my exercise routine was, or how many hours I spent sitting at my desk or on the couch staring at a screen, I drank a green smoothie every day.

And wow! I cannot even being to tell you how impactful this one simple habit was.

That's why I created my 7-Day Superfood Green Smoothie challenge, and I hope you'll join me!

The Best Green Smoothie Recipe

Alright, so on that note, let's get into today's recipe: a classic, organic Green Smoothie Recipe the whole family will love!

This is the perfect introduction for anyone who's never had a green smoothie before.

I've served this smoothie to dozens of friends and family members over the years, including kids, and I've yet to find anyone who doesn't think this smoothie is DELICIOUS!

Truly, this is the best green smoothie recipe I've tried, and it couldn't be easier to make. But first…

Before we get to the recipe, I thought it might be helpful for any green smoothie beginners out there to talk about what a green smoothie is.

Simply put, a green smoothie is a frozen drink made with a combination of leafy greens (like spinach or kale) and fruit, often berries, pineapple, mango, apple, banana, peaches, pear and even avocado.

Rest assured, you won’t even know there are greens in there, as these smoothies taste even more delicious than Orange Julius. Note, while all of these recipes contain greens (that's what makes them a “green smoothie”), not all are green in color.

Ingredients for easy, healthy, organic green smoothies - spinach, mango, chia seeds, wheatgrass, banana, coconut water, and more.

There are hundreds of different green smoothie recipes out there, but I've found that the best, tastiest and most healthy green smoothies are made without yogurt or dairy and instead use vegan liquid options, like coconut water, nut milks (almond milk and cashew milk are my favorites), coconut milk or just good ole' fashioned filtered water.

The difference between the green smoothies you'll find on Root + Revel and in our books and what's often sold in stores or found on Pinterest is that most smoothies are loaded with added sugar, low-quality dairy and protein powders and/or overly sweet juices, like orange juice and apple juice from concentrate, filled with additives.

Most store-bought smoothies are often suspiciously lacking in real fruits and greens, or are filled up primarily with sweet fruits only, the greens a mere afterthought.

Likewise, the green smoothies over here are dairy-free, chockfull of fresh fruits and vegetables and bursting with flavor, vitamins and minerals to nourish your body thanks to an abundance of superfoods.

Healthy Green Smoothies: Where to Start

Green smoothies are incredibly easy to make when you rely on organic fruit, leafy greens, dairy-free liquids and superfoods. Truly, that's the base for any delicious green smoothie recipe.

Throw it all in a powerful, high-speed blender, and you're ready to go within minutes!

There's a long-running debate on which blenders are best for green smoothies, and it often comes down to Vitamix vs Blendtec.

I can only speak from my personal experience using a Vitamix, but I HIGHLY RECOMMEND it! It is a splurge, to be sure, but unlike many less expensive blenders, the Vitamix liquefies even the densest, toughest and crunchiest items, from nuts and ice to frozen fruit, seeds and leafy greens.

There’s nothing the Vitamix can’t blend, and all in a matter of seconds. Though you can use any blender you may have at home, when it comes to blending green smoothies, you get what you pay for. (You can get it on Amazon or order direct through their website here, where you just might get a special discount or promotion.)

Where to Buy Green Smoothie Ingredients?

You can find most of the ingredients you'll need for green smoothies at any grocery store in the produce aisle.

I also rely on Thrive Market to buy some of the superfood ingredients and non-perishable items I use in my smoothies, like flaxseed, chia seeds, cacao nibs and powder, wheat grass and more. I find Thrive Market to be significantly cheaper and more convenient than anywhere else!

There is an annual membership fee–think of Thrive like a healthy, digital Costco membership–but after a couple of orders, you’ll likely have out-saved the cost of the membership. They make it easy to shop, especially if you have preferences like wanting all organic, or vegan, gluten-free, paleo, etc. since you can shop by category.

Plus, right now they’re offering 25% off your first order and a free gift when you join Thrive Market!, so you’re making up some of the price of the membership immediately with your first order.

You’ll also get free shipping over $49+ orders.

Are Green Smoothies Really Healthy?

With all the fad diets that come and go, it's only natural to wonder if green smoothies are really healthy. But I am here to tell you that, when done right (see above), green smoothies are one of the best things you can do for your health (and it isn't a “diet”)!

There’s been no single lifestyle change that’s made as much of an impact on my overall health as green smoothies have. That’s right! I truly believe that drinking a green smoothie every day is the most powerful thing I did (and still do!) for my health.

Not only did green smoothies help me balance my hormones, improve my digestion and boost my energy, but they reset my palate and made me fall in love with fresh fruits and vegetables again.

And with every green smoothie I drank, the more motivated and committed I felt to eating healthier throughout the day. It was such a simple lifestyle change that had a profound impact on my overall health.

Green smoothies are hydrating and great for your skin, they’re nutritious and full of fiber (compared to juices, which are fiberless and thus don’t help keep ya regular, if you catch my drift) and they’re one of the easiest ways to get multiple servings of fruits and vegetables in one sitting.

Should you do a green smoothie detox?

My answer above is exactly why I don't recommend a green smoothie detox, cleanse or diet. I think that while it can be great to give your digestion a break from time to time, drinking only liquids all day for several days at a time is unnecessary, and potentially harmful.

That's why I recommend doing a Daily Green Smoothie Challenge instead, where you simply add one green smoothie to your daily routine, rather than replacing all of your meals with green smoothies.

How Long Does a Green Smoothie Last in the Fridge?

I've had mixed results with keeping smoothies in the fridge–when covered and sealed, they can last for several days.

However, sometimes I think a quick whirl in the blender helps things get along better and prevents your smoothie from separating. You can also freeze smoothies and simply defrost them in the fridge overnight when you're ready to drink them.

We love green smoothies but I have learned a few things this recipe leaves out. Spinach is such a boss and a green smoothie will taste like spinach if you leave out a simple ingredient, like let’s say a banana.

  2. This was incredibly delicious – I’ll definitely be making it again – and I love your balanced approach to health! It’s wonderful to see someone promoting healthy green smoothies without any nonsense about unhealthy detox diets. I can’t wait to try more of your recipes!
