Have you hopped on the turmeric train yet? While turmeric has been used in India for thousands of years as a spice and medicinal herb (it's got downright extraordinary healing properties), it wasn't until the past few years that it's received the attention it deserves in the West.
But it's not just hype–as more and more research comes out, turmeric is being shown to support everything from healthy joints and metabolism, to brain and heart health, improving mood and boosting your stress tolerance, to soothing your digestion and healing your skin.
I do love me a good turmeric latte (aka golden milk), but now that the weather is warming up and I want something bright and refreshing, a turmeric tonic is just what the doctor ordered!
What is Turmeric Tonic?
This turmeric tonic is a true healing elixir–it's super high in:
- Vitamin A (great for our eyes, skin, bones, reproduction and immune system health)
- Vitamin C (skin-nourishing immune booster)
- Iron (improves muscle and brain function and metabolism)
- Potassium (improves heart health, anxiety and stress, muscle strength, metabolism, and electrolytic functions)
- Vitamin K (great for bone and blood health, critical for hormone balance)
The superstar ingredients behind this tonic? Fresh orange and carrot juices, ginger and (duh!) turmeric.
Carrots, one of the best sources of Vitamin A and antioxidants, have been shown to reduce cholesterol, lower risk of heart attacks, prevent certain cancers, improve vision, reduce signs of aging and improve the skin, boost the immune system, improve digestion, protect cardiovascular health, detoxify the body, and boost oral health… talk about a superfood!
Plus, carrots add a delicious sweetness to this turmeric tonic, which is balanced by zesty ginger and vibrant orange.
Ginger is another powerhouse with major anti-inflammatory properties, promoting proper digestion and blocking fungal and bacterial infections.
Then, of course, we have Vitamin C packed oranges, which are also an excellent source of dietary fiber, B Vitamins, and potassium.
And it wouldn't be turmeric tonic without the star ingredient: turmeric.
Health Benefits of Turmeric
Did you know that turmeric is one of the most powerful herbs for preventing, fighting and even reversing disease?

So what are some of its magical abilities?
- Turmeric is a great immune system supporter, often being used in home remedies for the flu. Its powerful antioxidant properties fight excess free radicals in the body that can damage cells and diminish health, thus promoting health and vitality.
- Turmeric reduces inflammation like nobody’s business. And as we now know, chronic inflammation can cause a host diseases and debilitating conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis, heart disease, digestive disorders (from IBD and IBS to Ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease), asthma, ulcers, sinusitis, atherosclerosis, periodontitis, hay fever, active hepatitis, diabetes, Alzheimer’s and even cancer.
- The active compound in turmeric is called curcumin, which not only reduces inflammation, but it also helps with depression, pain, diabetes, IBS and cholesterol. In fact, a number of studies have even reported that using curcumin is more advantageous than certain prescription drugs (source). I actually always take turmeric when I have a headache or joint/muscle pain before resorting to Advil since it's such an amazing anti-inflammatory with none of the nasty side effects.

How to Use Turmeric
Typically, turmeric is ingested, either from food or in supplement form. In this recipe, I used fresh turmeric root, which you can find at many supermarkets and most health food stores.
Like ginger, turmeric needs to be peeled, and then either grated (with a handy tool like a microplane) or simply tossed into a high speed blender, like my trusty Vitamix (if you're in the market for a Vitamix, be sure to check out their website where they often have special discounts and deals!).
Remember how we talked about curcuminoids being the active ingredient in turmeric that provides the amazing health benefits?
This recipe also includes the addition of black pepper, which drastically increases your body's absorption of curcuminoids.
If you're ingesting turmeric with your food, be sure to add at least a dash of black pepper to increase your absorption of the health benefits.
If you want to ensure you get maximum benefit from turmeric, I recommend taking it as a daily supplement.

Anti-Inflammatory Turmeric Tonic
- Zest both oranges and add zest to a high-powered blender. Juice the oranges, adding juice to the blender.
- Add all remaining ingredients to blender, except the sparkling water. Blend until smooth.
- Evenly divide turmeric mixture between two large glasses. Top each glass with 1/2 cup sparkling water. Serve and enjoy!
