We haven’t done a lot of stories here on R+R about creating a clean, safe, non-toxic home, but that’s going to change. Because health is about so much more than just eating healthy food (though it definitely starts with food).

Though we’ve talked about how to make your home smell good naturally and why you should DIY your own cleaning products to reduce the toxins in your home, something has been missing here on R+R for a while and it’s time to remedy that.

Organic Bedding! Yes, what you sleep on matters. Think about it: we spend roughly one-third of our lives sleeping, so it’s beyond important to make conscious decisions about WHAT we’re sleeping on, and what affect this has on our home, the environment and our personal health.

We don’t often realize how common household items like furniture, mattresses, bedding and towels are often made from materials that are harmful to our health.

But sadly, not only are these items often laced with chemicals that can cause chronic health conditions, but they’re also often not eco-friendly or sustainably made.

That’s why I decided to put together this comprehensive, non-toxic guide on organic mattresses and natural bedding–I want to provide you and your family with a variety of options that foster a chemical-free, healthy indoor environment while promoting green living, well-being and sustainability.

I’m warning you now: this guide is a doozy. To say it’s comprehensive is an understatement–it includes an FAQ about the common dangers of conventional bedding, plus a list of all the different certifications) AND THEN we get to the shopping guide itself.

After researching and personally testing out a variety of different brands, we’ve listed the key points so that you can compare, contrast and pick the products and budget that works for you!

FAQ: THE DANGERS OF CONVENTIONAL BEDDING

What’s so bad about conventional bedding, you may be wondering? Let’s take a closer look.

Q: What are some of the toxic ingredients often found in standard mattresses?

A: Chemical flame retardants, heavy metals, formaldehyde, chloroform, phthalates, mercury and lead, to name a few. You may also have heard of the term Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), which is a term for hazardous materials – solids or liquids – that easily become vapors.

Q: Why does this matter?

A: Not only can these toxins contact and get absorbed through contact with your skin – your largest organ – but these VOC emissions also pollute the air you breathe in your home.

Other sources of chemical emissions may include cleaning products, furnishings and furniture, flooring, cabinetry, paint, textiles,  building materials, lacquer thinners, moth repellents, air fresheners, hobby supplies, wood preservatives, aerosol sprays, degreasers, automotive products, and dry cleaning fluids.

Q: Will these indoor pollutants actually make me sick though?

A: It depends. There are many factors, including the type of pollutant, its concentration, the duration of exposure, the method of exposure (inhalation, ingestion or dermal absorption) and the individual sensitivities of those exposed, including if you have allergies, skin sensitivities or other predispositions, that will affect the impact these pollutants can have.

Building conditions, such as the amount of ventilation, age of the building, indoor temperature and humidity levels, can also have an impact. At the end of the day, you have to ask yourself…is it worth the risk?

Q: What are the health impacts of poor indoor air quality?

A: There are a variety of potential impacts, including headaches, eye, nose and throat irritation, allergic skin reactions, difficulty breathing, nausea and/or vomiting, confusion, loss of coordination, dizziness, fatigue and nosebleeds.

Long-term or chronic health impacts include damage to the heart, liver or kidneys, damage to the central nervous system, cancer, respiratory diseases, hypersensitivity pneumonitis, allergic rhinitis (hay fever), and asthma. (source)

Q: Are children more susceptible to pollutants?

A: Indoor pollutants such as certain chemicals, particles and allergens can cause more severe health effects in children because their organs and respiratory, immune and neurological systems are still developing.

Infants and young children breathe through their mouths more often than adults, which increases their risk of pulmonary exposure to particulates and fibers that would otherwise be filtered out in the nose. They also have a higher heart rate than adults, which allows substances that are absorbed into the blood to permeate tissues faster. (source)

Q: So is organic bedding the answer?

A: Can you believe that 30% percent of the world’s pesticides are used to grow conventional cotton? Enormous quantities of chlorine, toxic dyes and finishing chemicals are used to process it – and this toxic cotton is in our sheets, blankets, mattresses, clothing and tampons.

Organic cotton is the purest form of cotton, grown without synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, or GMO’s. Free from harmful chemicals, organic cotton is better both for your health and the people growing it.

So that is the first place to start when it comes to natural bedding and reducing the pollutants in your home.

NATURAL MATTRESS CERTIFICATIONS

Other than looking for organic cotton in bedding and mattresses, there are a number of third-party certification programs that help consumers identify what products and brands meet their needs and expectations, since federal, state or local laws do not regulate product emissions or other standards.

Unfortunately, with many products, labeling makes it difficult to know whether you’re really getting what you think you are when you purchase a product.

These certifications help bridge the knowledge gap since the certifying organizations have no vested interests in the products they certify, so we can count on their certifications to indicate products that are safe for us and our families.

Here is a list and explanation of the certifications you’ll see with some of the organic mattress and natural bedding brands below. For more information, see this post from Bedtimes Magazine.

  • GREENGUARD GOLD: Scientifically tested to meet some of the world’s most rigorous emissions standards for chemical exposure and pollutants, such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), formaldehyde and phthalates. Achieving Greenguard certification gives credence to manufacturers’ sustainability claims. Few mattresses and pillows qualify for this gold standard.
  • Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS): Recognized as the standard for organic consumer goods, GOTS includes both environmental and social requirements for post-farm and retail-shelf management. Key points include a ban on the use of child labor, genetic engineering, heavy metals and highly hazardous chemicals such as formaldehyde, while requiring living wages and strict wastewater treatment practices.
  • Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS): Outlines requirements for latex products where they must contain more than 95% certified organic raw material. The GOLS standard features permissible limits for harmful substances, emission test requirements and polymer and filler percentages. Rubber plantations, processing units and the final retailer are all certified according to their standards.
  • STANDARD 100: A testing, auditing and certification system for environmentally friendly operations that tests textile products for potentially harmful substances at all stages of processing. Certification shows the products are free from allergenic dyes, pesticides, chlorinated phenols, heavy metals, formaldehyde, chloro-organic carriers and has a pH that’s not harmful to the skin.
  • CertiPUR-US: Provides assurance that the foam has been tested to meet specific criteria for indoor emissions, content and physical performance, demonstrating a commitment to environmental stewardship. This guarantees the products have low emissions (VOCs); are made without ozone depleters, mercury, lead, heavy metals, PBDE flame retardants, formaldehyde or phthalates.
  • eco-INSTITUT: Responsible for testing products to determine their pollutants and emissions, even for trace amounts and residues of hazardous chemicals as well as any outgassing created by the products. These are products you can use in your home with confidence that they do not contain even trace amounts of hazardous chemicals and will not produce foul, unhealthy ooff-gassing in your home.
  • GREEN AMERICA: Recognizes companies and organizations that meet or exceed their standards for social and environmental responsibility. They certify companies that are committed to using business as a platform for social change, operating in a “value-based” and environmentally responsible manner.
  • Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) Chain of Custody: Meets standards of rigorous environmental, social and economic criteria designed to protect lands, ecosystems and workers, while contributing to global conservation, community well-being and economic stability.
  • MADE SAFE: America’s first nontoxic seal for products we use every day. The seal indicates a product has been made with ingredients not known or suspected to cause human health harm, scrutinized by scientists and experts to ensure they do not contain harmful ingredients or release vapors, gases, or by-products that could impact human health like carcinogens, heavy metals, neurotoxins and more.
  • USDA Organic: This label indicates that an agricultural product has been produced through approved methods that integrate cultural, biological and mechanical practices that promote ecological balance and conserve biodiversity. Synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, irradiation and genetic engineering may not be used.
  • OCS100 Organic Content Standard: Ensures proper tracking of organic material from its source to the finished product, guaranteeing traceability and integrity of raw materials during all manufacturing stages.
  • Cradle-to-Cradle: Evaluates products according to health impact, materials re-use, renewable energy, water stewardship, and social fairness.

Alright, enough talk. Let’s get to the Organic Mattress + Natural Bedding Guide!

MY EXPERIENCE WITH AVOCADO:

I received a complimentary queen mattress and two king pillows from Avocado as I was researching this story. We upgraded our guest room bed with their mattress (we got one with a pillow top) and every guest who’s stayed with us has commented how much they love it.

I find Avocado’s mattresses to be incredible soft, plush and cozy–much like a really luxe hotel bed. Their pillows are on the less firm side, which I like, but they can be a little lumpy feeling. I love that they’re made from natural latex and natural Kapok fill, however, and wrapped in a certified organic cotton cover. Super plush!

Organic Mattresses & Bedding: Loom & Leaf by Saatva

Think your home is safe from toxins? Think again! The health impact of our everyday items like bedding, mattresses, and furniture is real! In this ultimate guide to organic mattresses and natural bedding, we share what you need to know in order to create a safe, healthy and eco-friendly sleeping space. Plus, we researched and tested some of the best non-toxic brands out there and break down the myriad of options for mattresses, sheets, pillows, towels and more!  And there's a giveaway!

WHO IS LOOM & LEAF?

  • Loom & Leaf is the luxury memory foam mattress by Saatva, the company FORBES named to its top 100 companies to watch. It’s best compared to iComfort and Tempur-Pedic®but at a fraction of the price. How? Because of the online business model without any overhead for store fronts, the resulting savings are passed onto the customer.
  • Another key difference: Loom & Leaf hand-crafts their mattresses in USA and Canadian factories using recycled tempered steel, eco-friendly foams, and organic cotton coverings, while also being committed to a smaller carbon footprint.

WHAT MAKES THEM SAFE, ECO-FRIENDLY AND ORGANIC/NATURAL?

  • By sourcing their foam in the US from suppliers use renewable oils, L&L’s mattresses have greatly reduced greenhouse gasses normally created in the foam manufacturing process. The result: cool, contouring layers of proprietary memory foam with an ultra-luxury feel.

  • Covered in a breathable, organic cotton and natural thistle flame retardant, L&L’s mattresses keep you comfortable, cool and safe.

  • Patented Spinal-Zone Gel – a unique, non-toxic and stable cooling gel panel layered onto the spinal area and into the top layer of memory foam, promoting a cool and restful sleep, spinal alignment and elimination of pressure points. This is key because memory foam mattresses have a reputation for getting hot.

MY EXPERIENCE with Loom & Leaf:

I received a complimentary King mattress, foundation and frame from Loom & Leaf as I was researching this story. WOW! Not only was upgrading from a queen mattress to a king life-changing (with a husband and two cats in my bed every night, it could get a little crowded), but this mattress is so supportive and cozy that every single night I get into bed I say to Matt, “Oh man, that feels so good.”

We opted for the firm level, and I will say that it is quite firm, with just enough give to keep you comfortable. Matt loves it–if it was just me, I might of gone for the relaxed firm as I really like to feel like I’m being swallowed by my bed, tucked into a cocoon of plushness.

But I will admit that my back and neck feel so much better when I wake up in the morning and I know it’s because of the support this mattress provides. Oh and it’s super cool, temperature-wise, too.

MY EXPERIENCE:

I received complimentary sheets, pillows and towels from Cariloha as I was researching this story. As soon as I unpacked them from the box, I knew I was going to love them. They were easily the softest sheets and towels I’ve ever felt. I mean, like rub your face against them, soft.

My mother-in-law was here when the package arrived, and she said they were so luxe and soft that she was going to go home and buy some as soon as she got home. I couldn’t wait to put them on my new bed.

Every night, I marvel at how silky and cool and just amazing these sheets feel. And that was before I even tried the pillows. I got one of each, and while they’re all plush and cozy, my favorite pillow is their Gel Pillow, which is made from Bamboo Charcoal Memory Foam with a cooling gel-top layer that helps regulate sleep temperatures. It’s the perfect firmness–supportive and yet super cushy–and my husband and I fight over who gets to sleep with it every night.

Likewise, their towels are beyond soft, so much so that I was worried they wouldn’t be that absorbent. But they really are–my only complaint is they can take a while to dry.

    • Crib mattresses range from $259 to $399 + lifetime warranty and 30-day money back guarantee
    • Take their mattress selector quiz to find out which mattress is best suited for you!

MY EXPERIENCE WITH NATUREPEDIC:

I received a complimentary Organic Cotton 400 Thread Count Luxury Sheet Set while I was researching this story. While their sheets have the most eco-friendly, non-toxic certifications, they’re not quite as silky soft as Cariloha’s bamboo sheets, though they are a bit more substantial and might be better for people who live in colder climates. Both brands’ sheets cost $259, so it really comes down to a personal preference and how “green” you want to go and what texture you prefer: light and silky or warm and earthy.

I also received a complimentary Trio Organic Pillow, which is basically three products in one: a quilted outer encasement covers a shredded organic latex core, both of which are covered with an organic cotton sateen pillowcase. I found the pillow to be quite bulky with the quilted middle section, though it did add some cloud-like softness to my sleep. When I removed it, though, it made for a really snuggly pillow that I like to use in tandem with a memory foam pillow for more support.

MY EXPERIENCE WITH NEST BEDDING:

Their sheets are just are just $179 for King size, which puts them easily in the most affordable category of organic sheets I’ve found. Plus, they’re soft and cozy too!

Organic Mattresses & Natural Bedding: Plush Beds

Think your home is safe from toxins? Think again! The health impact of our everyday items like bedding, mattresses, and furniture is real! In this ultimate guide to organic mattresses and natural bedding, we share what you need to know in order to create a safe, healthy and eco-friendly sleeping space. Plus, we researched and tested some of the best non-toxic brands out there and break down the myriad of options for mattresses, sheets, pillows, towels and more!  And there's a giveaway!

WHO IS PLUSH BEDS?

  • Plush Beds is “American Made Luxury”. They offer customization, so you and your partner can each find the sleep surface and adjustable position that suits you best.
  • Most of their beds are made from latex, a sought-after mattress material due to its adaptability, long life, and comfort.

WHAT MAKES THEM SAFE, ECO-FRIENDLY AND ORGANIC/NATURAL?

  • Natural latex – a biological byproduct of the rubber tree plant that can be sustainably harvested over the course of the tree’s natural lifespan.
    • Latex mattresses cushion your body, align your spine, regulate body temperature, and have the staying power to last 20 years or more.
    • In order to carry the “100% all-natural latex” tag, the foam used to construct the mattress must be entirely manufactured from botanical latex.
  • Pure New Zealand wool – breathes more naturally than synthetic counterparts and creates a micro climate which assists in regulating body temperature and humidity.
  • Non-woven organic cotton – Non-Woven mattress covers are softer, more breathable, more elastic, offer better moisture control, and provide better pressure relief than woven covers.

MY EXPERIENCE WITH PLUSH BEDS:

I received an Organic Shredded Latex Pillow and Solid Organic Latex Pillow from Plush Beds while researching this story. Much like the Avocado pillows, they were really soft and cozy, but a bit lumpy, which can be a transition if you’re used to smooth goose-down pillows.

These pillows are great for people who don’t like super firm pillows, and they’re just $89 (the same price as Avocado) for a queen.
