Green Beauty Routine!

As a green blogger, I am constantly testing out new products and trying new things. BUT, there are certain products I go back to again and again, products that withstand the test of time because they just work. To wit, here are the products that are currently part of my green beauty routine, as of February 2020.

Face WashSuki Exfoliate Foaming Cleanser is such a fun treat, but for everyday cleansing I use Beautycounter's Countercontrol Clear Pore Cleanser. Not only does it remove all my makeup, and without harshly stripping my skin of its natural oils, but jojoba beads gently exfoliate and clean out my pores.

I typically use these in the shower, but prefer to use oils and balms at night before bed. See below:

Beautycounter's Countertime Cleansing Oil

Oil Cleansers: I am absolutely addicted to Leahlani's Pamplemousse Tropical Enzyme Cleansing Oil. It smells INCREDIBLE, gets off all my makeup, while gently exfoliating and brightening my skin. I also adore and alternate with Beautycounter's Countertime Lipid Defense Cleansing Oil as a cleanser and makeup remover–my skin always feels so nourished when I use it!

I swap between oil cleansers and cleansing balms, either alternating nights or based on what my skin needs. Beautycounter’s Cleansing Balm will always be a favorite. The balm is a bit more hydrating and contains radiance-boosting vitamin C, whereas the enzyme oil is a bit more exfoliating due to pineapple and papaya enzymes.

Naturopathica's Manuka Honey Cleansing Balm

Newer to me but equally as obsession-worthy and “I can't enough!”-ness is Naturopathica's Manuka Honey Cleansing Balm. OMG–it's so hydrating and soothing and smells sooo yummy!! (I order mine at Follain–take 10% off your first order with the code ROOTANDREVEL)

Sometimes if I’m feeling lazy, I’ll use these makeup remover wipes (they're bio-degradable and seriously get rid of every last trace of makeup).

Makeup Remover: I use my DIY Makeup Remover every day to remove eye makeup.

Toner: Once again, I alternate between two products, depending on what my skin needs. If I'm broken out, I reach for True Botanicals Clear Nutrient Toner which is super gentle and yet a super effective antibacterial toner that clears acne and congestion, balancing out the oil in your skin (unlike traditional acne astringent which actually strips your skin on oils and causes it to produce more sebum leading to more breakouts!).

Otherwise, I like Beautycounter's Countertime Mineral Boost Hydrating Essence, which is kind of like a toner but more nourishing. It's lightweight and lends vital nutrients to the skin’s moisture barrier.

I always circle back to my DIY Toner, too!

And for quick pick-me-up spritzes throughout the day, I love Leahlani's Citrus & Citrine Toning Mist. So light and refreshing and it smells AMAZING!

Treat/Facial Serum:  #1 hands down is True Botanicals Clear Cellular Repair Serum (I mix in the Vitamin C Booster at night). Nothing got rid of my acne and scarring like this combo! It fights infection and clears congestion thanks to black willow bark extract, while strengthening and hydrating your skin with hyaluronic acid. And Vitamin C is the #1 way to brighten and lighten skin–this powder is the most potent form, as in liquid form vitamin C loses its potency. It's mixed with ferulic acid, which also stimulates collagen (read: fewer wrinkles!)! Seriously one of my very favorite beauty products of all time. Get 15% off at True Botanicals with the code Root15!

I also recently got turned onto Laurel Skincare and am addicted to their Anti-Inflammatory Serum, which is perfect when I have active breakouts. It's a concentrated moisturizer, serum, and elemental defense oil in one, getting to the root cause (inflammation) of all secondary skin symptoms; including but not limited to cystic acne, rosacea, redness, broken capillaries, excessive dryness, loss of elasticity, and hyper-pigmentation.

Beautycounter's Counter+ line.

I find keeping my skin guessing a bit helps keep it clear and happy.

Beautycounter's Countermatch Collection.

Moisturizer: These days I'm loving the daytime combo of Beautycounter's Countermatch Intense Moisture Serum (it's got two forms of hyaluronic acid so it's super age-preventing and hydrating, while vitamins C and E provide antioxidant protection and improve skin radiance) with the Countermatch Adaptive Moisture Lotion, which actually adjusts hydration levels throughout the day with its Bio-Mimic Technology and the unique life-giving properties of plants to exactly match the structure of skin.

True Botanicals Moisture Lock Overnight Mask is the best moisturizer!

At night, True Botanicals‘ Moisture Lock Overnight Mask is my latest obsession. Seriously, I cannot get over how much I adore this stuff! I've been using it almost every night for weeks and my skin has drastically improved both in hydration, softness and virtually no acne. I just can't get over how silky smooth this moisturizer (it's really not a mask!) makes my skin.

I also regularly rotate in Laurel Skincare's Restore Nightly Balm at night. OMG I totally get why this balm is such a cult favorite.

This nightly balm has the most beautiful orange hue thanks to potent, raw, unrefined botanicals, it melts into my skin, deeply repairing cellular free radical damage and restoring vibrancy. It's one of the most advanced anti-aging products I've ever used and because it's so phytonutrient dense, I wake up with buttery soft glowing skin. Tip: you can apply a heavier layer of this at night and use it as a mask. Leave it on for 20-30 minutes and rinse.

Another tried and true product is Beautycounter's Countermatch Recovery Sleeping Cream. It's silly, but I love the pump dispenser that gives you the exact amount you should apply when pressed. And then, of course, the advanced blend of hyaluronic acid, plum oil, and tara gum creates a protective layer to help replenish hydration and revitalize skin while you sleep—so skin looks youthfully smoother, softer, and more radiant in the morning. YAAAAS!

Exfoliating Treatment: NOTHING makes my skin as silky smooth as Goop By Juice Beauty’s Instant Facial, and it only takes 5 minutes. I usually put it on while I brush my teeth. Made with natural alpha and beta hydroxy acids, plant-based cellulose beads and 86% USDA-certified organic ingredients, it's almost amazing how effective this treatment is!

Face Mask: Leahlani's Mermaid Mask and Beautycounter's Charcoal Facial Mask are in constant rotation for a reason. The mermaid mask is an intoxicating shade of emerald green goodness that nourishes, clarifies, purifies, softens and renews your complexion thanks to nutrient dense Hawaiian spirulina and raw honey, premium chlorella and circulation-boosting essential oils that will feed each cell, resulting in the ultimate glow.

Beautycounter Charcoal Mask in bowl with brush

Meanwhile, the charcoal mask is what I reach for when my skin is congested and broken out. This dark and haunting beauty deep-cleans and balances, absorbing excess oil and drawing out impurities thanks to activated charcoal, which also minimizes the appearance of pores, giving skin a smooth, refined appearance, and salicylic acid, which stimulates exfoliation. Works EVERY TIME!

A regular obsession is Leahlani's Honey Love Exfoliator. I use it as a mask for 10-15 minutes, and my skin is so soft, clear and even afterward thanks to a potent blend of superfood maqui berry, tonifying hibiscus, anti-inflammatory noni fruit, stimulating clays, sweet Hawaiian nectars and microdermabrasion crystals.

Likewise, I also love the cult classic Laurel Skincare's Honey Berry Enzyme Mask, the beauty of which lies in its simplicity. With only 5 superfood ingredients, this nourishing treatment acts as a brightening enzymatic exfoliator, a hydrator that visibly plumps and firms the skin, and an antioxidant-rich feast for an overall healthy glow. Seriously good enough to eat!

Maya Chia's Refresh Mint Mask - a great natural exfoliating mask.

For silky smooth softness, I recommend Maya Chia‘s The Refresh Mint Mask. This exfoliating mask comes alive courtesy of four types of acids that work together to brighten and resurface the skin and I love the tingly feeling I get when I put on the vibrant blue mask.

Laurel's Brighten Mask is what I reach for when discoloration is really bad, like right after a pimple goes away and I'm left with a red mark in its place. It's bursting with Vitamin C and all of its vital cofactors to lighten discoloration with its delicate raw fruit acids. Its phytonutrient density works to repair discoloration damage on a deeper level, while it strengthens and firms connective tissue.

Beautycounter's Countertime Eye Cream is the best natural eye cream on the market!

Eye Cream: By a landslide my favorite is Beautycounter's Countertime Ultra Renewal Eye Cream. It's clinically proven to reduce under-eye puffiness and discoloration, visibly increase skin firmness, and reduce crow's feet, fine lines, and wrinkles.

Special Tools: I got this beautiful Jade Facial Roller for Christmas and can't get over how amazing it feels on my skin–it's super cooling so it's great for depuffing and stimulating collagen production. It also helps plump up fine lines and just wake up your skin in the morning.

Avoid toxic chemicals and save money with this super quick and easy DIY Homemade Toner. With just 3 ingredients you can soothe, clean and refresh your skin.

Concealer: I apply Hynt Duet Perfecting Concealer with a beauty blender spritzed with a rosewater toner to dampen the sponge). It hides dark circles and imperfections like nobody's business!

Recently I've also been loving Wander Beauty's award-winning Dualist Matte + Illuminating Concealer, which is super cool because it has a full-coverage matte stick on one end and a lightweight illuminating liquid on the other. No creasing, no caking!

Tinted Moisturizer: Beautycounter Dew Skin Moisturizing Coverage SPF20 or Mineral Fusion Illuminating Beauty Balm SPF 9, which provides a bit more coverage than the former.

Beautycounter's Tint Skin Foundation
Foundation: Beautycounter’s Tint Skin Foundation (I wear Sand) is what I wear almost every day–it's the perfect amount of coverage (and buildable when needed), and sinks into your skin perfectly covering any imperfections and evening skin tone, especially when applied with the Alima Pure Kabuki Brush.

I alternate between that and Wander Beauty's liquid foundation, which blends perfectly with the included foundation brush (it has both a dual-ended flat foundation and kabuki brush). You can use this all over, or target specific areas with the flat applicator to spot correct or sculpt a flawless highlight and contour.

Powder: On days when my skin is super oily, or I don't have time to apply liquid foundation, a quick sweep of Inika Organics Loose Mineral Foundation with SPF25 does the trick. It's the perfect safe and natural dupe for Bare Minerals lovers. (You can get it online at the store Safe & Chic–use our code ROOT10 for 10% off!)

Bronzer: Beautycounter’s Bronzer is my daily go-to as it's matte (no shimmer) and gives me the perfect contoured boost.

To mix things up, I also recently got turned on to Wander Beauty's Flawless Flush Duo (includes both blush and bronzer) AND it comes with a dual-sided brush that REALLY makes application a breeze! The tapered side is perfect for blush and the angled side for bronzer.

Blush: I switch up blush like I do lipstick or eye shadow, just depending on my mood that day, what I'm doing/wearing and what the weather is like. Here are my favorites:

Highlighter: I've fallen madly in love with Beautycounter's Highlighter Palette–I used the Sunkissed color like a bronzer, and then apply the beautiful Halo color to my cheekbones, eyelids, nose and forehead. The perfect subtle glow!

However, this palette is only available seasonally around the end of year holidays, but you can still get the halo Luminous Powder Highlighter year round (my favorite of the three in the palette!).

Eye Shadow: I have green eyes, so gravitate to plummy shades that bring those out. I like BeautyCounters cream shadows and I rotate between those and 100% Pure in Satin Cream and Vapour Mesmerize Cream Eye Stick in Sugar for everyday super subtle look that just brightens or RMS Beauty Eye Polish in Magnetic for more of a smoky eye.

Eyeliner: Beautycounter Color Outline Eye Pencil in black

Mascara: Inika Organics Vegan Mascara is my all-time favorite green mascara. I've been using their new formula called Curvy Lash in Blue and love how it brings out the green in my eyes and gives me dramatic yet natural lashes. (Get 10% off your purchase at Safe & Chic–an online retailer who sells Inika Organics and other clean beauty brands–with our code ROOT10!)

Eyelash Curler: Plume

Eyebrow Definer: Beautycounter Brilliant Brow Gel (I wear Medium)

Beautycounter's Color Intense Lipstick

Lip Gloss: Currently addicted to Beautycounter's Lip Gloss, which is super moisturizing and non-sticky, with a hint of peppermint. Their mini vault is a great deal as you get 10 shades to suit every look, including a mix of limited-edition shades and customer favorites, for just $89 (a $126 value).

I also love Crunchi's Lip Gloss in Date Night.

Lipstick: I alternate between Beautycounter’s Lip Sheers (my fave shades are Plum, Petal, and Currant) and their Color Intense Lipsticks (my fave shades are Boardwalk, 9-to-5, Premiere and Sunset), depending on how intense I want my lip color to be. The Lip sheers are incredibly moisturizing and are almost more like a tinted chapstick, while their lipsticks are deeply pigmented and yet still very hydrating.

This lipstick duo is a great money-saving combo.

I also love Mineral Fusion’s Sheer Moisture Lip Tint in Adorn (this is the perfect natural alternative to Clinique's Black Honey). Actually, pretty much anything lip from Mineral Fusion–their lipstick in Alluring is a current fave, and I love their Lipstick Butter in Blackberry for a darker lip.

Shampoo: Beautycounter’s Volumizing ShampooTrue Botanicals Nourishing Shampoo and Innersense Organic Beauty Color Awakening Hairbath (these are the only natural shampoos I've found that actually lather and leave my hair feeling clean!) Remember: get 15% off at True Botanicals with the code Root15.

For dry shampoo, my fave is Briogeo's Scalp Revival with Charcoal–it actually works and even comes in a small enough bottle perfect for travel.

Once a week, I use Goop's GTox Salt Scalp Scrub Shampoo. It's seriously SO COOL. It's a unique whipped shampoo made of exfoliating mineral-rich Himalayan pink salt that cleanses the hair and scalp of product buildup, dirt, and oil. It starts out grainy like a scrub but as you work it through your scalp, it actually foams up!

ConditionerInnersense Organic Beauty Color Radiance Daily Conditioner is my favorite conditioner by far! As soon as I put this stuff in, it instantly softens and detangles my thick hair like magic. Though I don’t have color treated hair, this formula is still amazing for dry or medium textured hair and I can’t love it more!

I also love Beautycounter Smoothing Conditioner and True Botanicals Nourishing Conditioner.

Also, once a week or so, I’ll do a facial at home and I try to also give my hair some deep conditioning TLC with EVOLVh UltraRepair Reconstructing Masque. This hair mask smells like a peach and is highly effective for smoothing coarse, curly or frizz-prone hair, and protecting your hair from breakage, dehydration, tangles and split ends. To say my hair feels like silk after I use it is an understatement! Leaving it in overnight makes my hair the softest it’s ever been! Use the code ROOT for 15% off at EVOLVh!

Innersense I Create Volume: If I’m going to blow dry my hair straight, I’ll apply this lightweight gel to my roots to give me some lift at my scalp. I love how it’s made with  Certified Organic honey and aloe vera to bring fullness and manageability, while also keeping my hair shiny!

Innersense I Create Waves: This Pink Himalayan sea salt spray filled with minerals and amethyst crystal creates crazy sexy texture! Great for second- or third-day hair to revive style and volume without creating dryness like typical salt sprays. I use this on dry hair after I’ve styled it to add some grit and hold.

Hairspray: Josh Rosebrook Hairspray Firm Hold

Hair Serum: EVOLVh SuperFinish Polishing Balm. What does this product NOT do?! It’s seriously a superhero that delivers brilliant shine and flyaway control, defrizzes, moisturizes, strengthens, prevents breakage and splitting, all without being greasy or adding weight. It’s an awesome alternative to oils that moisturizes dry ends and protects against UV and heat damage. And the fragrance-free scent is the most intoxicating of all the hair products I use! I can’t stop sniffing my hair when I put this in. Use the code ROOT for 15% off at EVOLVh!

When I'm done styling my hair, I usually polish it off with Alterna Kendi Oil. While this oil is free of sulfates, parabens, phthalates, mineral oil and some other hazards, it isn’t 100% clean since it has some questionable ingredients like fragrance. I do still love this oil for sealing my split ends on wet or dry hair, and occasionally as a nourishing mask treatment.

Dry Shampoo: I recently discovered Mineral Fusion's Dry Shampoo (Medium to Dark) and I love how it not only sops up any excess oil, but also doesn't leave a white, powdery residue in my dark hair.

That said, it's only good for day 1-2 of no washing. For heavier duty, I like Hair Dance's Dry Shampoo Volume Powder, which is 100% Natural & Organic and works so well!

Pony Tail Holders: Invisibobble Original in Brown

Hair Brush: Wet Brush Pro gets out the toughest knots and tangles in one clean swipe. I don't understand how it works, but I'll never use another brush again!

Curling Iron: Whether I want those beachy waves or tighter curls, I use my Tyme Iron, which makes it easy to replicate flat iron curls without learning the tricky hand techniques!

Hair Dryer: I recently splurged and bought the Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer and I honestly couldn't be happier. Not only is it super lightweight and quiet, but I kid you not my hair dries in under 10 minutes (and I've got SUPER THICK, wavy hair that normally takes 25-30 minutes to dry completely). It's very expensive, but my hope is that it will last me for years and years and make my life so much easier in the meantime.

Hair Towel: I recently tried Aquis’ Rapid Dry Hair Turban that’s proven to cut drying time by 50% thanks to a proprietary wicking fabric. The turban prevents something called Hygral Fatigue, which is the stretching and swelling of wet hair that makes it vulnerable to frizz and damage. This turban is designed to: reduce frizz and breakage; help hair look shinier, smoother, and softer; create bounce and volume; help with curl definition; and even claims that your hair becomes healthier over time, reducing the need for styling products. While I haven’t used it long enough to know if that last part is true, I’ve really loved this turban so far and am amazed at how much faster my hair dries and how much healthier it looks! Use the code REVEL10 for 10% off your purchase at Aquis!

Body WashEveryday Coconut Body Wash in Lavender or Dr. Bronner’s Castile Soap in Baby Unscented. I also love Mother Dirt's Probiotic Cleanser and Beautycounter's Body Wash in Citrus Mimosa.

Body Scrub: Nothing in my shower smells as intoxicating as Beautycounter's Lemongrass Body Scrub!

Hand Soap: EO Hand Soap in Coconut Lavender

Hand Sanitizer: Grove Collaborative Hand Sanitizer Spray and Everyone in Coconut and Lemon (smells like the beach!)

Bubble Bath: EveryDay Shea Moisturizing Shea Butter Bubble Bath in Lemon-Lavender

Epsom Salt: Epsoak Sleep Formula

Deodorant: I rotate between Native Deodorant’s natural deodorant, type:A's sweat-activated cream deodorant, Schmidt's Charcoal + Magnesium, though I often skip deodorant thanks to Mother Dirt's Probiotic AO Mist.

Lotion: Beautycounter's Melting Body Balm is decadent and luxurious. Extra hydrating for dry wintry skin, or for summer skin that's been exposed to the harsh sun.

Body Brush (for dry brushing): 100% Natural Boar Bristle Body Brush

Perfume: Skylar perfumes are the holy grail of natural, non-toxic and cruelty-free perfumes. Unlike many natural perfumes that just smell like essential oils, Skylar‘s scents actually smell like perfume, but they're hypoallergenic and subtle. Honestly, the just smell fresh and clean and delicious. I've been alternating between Capri, Isle and Willow and can't decide which one I like best. Get a sampler set for $29 here.

While not intended to be perfume, I do want to give a shoutout to True Botanicals' essential oil roll-ons. I always carry these in my purse and am addicted to them all–Stress Relief, Muscle Release, and Immune Boost.

SunscreenBeautycounter’s Protect All Over Sunscreen SPF 30 and their  Countersun Spray are HANDS DOWN the best sunscreens ever. Not only are they the only natural mineral sunscreen I've found that actually rubs in with no white, ashy residue, but they smell amazing and they're reef-friendly! Need a little color? They also have Tinted Spray Sunscreens for an instant glow!

Self-Tanner: I recently tried Vita Liberata Phenomenal 2- 3 Week Tan Mousse (I use Medium/Dark) and was blown away by the natural results that happened after just the first use! I prefer this one to their Invisi Foaming Tan Water just because you can see where you're applying it.

For an Instant Tan, I have been obsessed with their Body Blur, which seriously makes me glow at least 2-3 shades darker upon applying. And it usually lasts for a day or two. They call it their Insta-filter and I agree! Love that this brand is Organic too! 🙂

Toothpaste: I recently started using Tom's Rapid Relief after my holistic dentist told me it would help a lot with sensitivity. She was so right! I love this stuff 🙂

Toothbrush: My same holistic dentist also recommended I get the Philips Sonicare ProtectiveClean 4100 Plaque Control electric toothbrush and I have been loving it so far!

Mouthwash: Oral Essentials Sensitive Teeth Mouthwash or Essential Oxygen Organic Brushing Rinse

Whitening Strips: Oral Essentials Teeth Whitening Strips (these natural strips blow Crest Whitestrips out of the water!)

Organic Belly BalmMidwife and Mum Tummy Butter and Earth Mama moisturizing belly oil kept me from getting stretch marks!

Prenatal Bath Bombs: Glow Organics Bath Bombs; I also loved their Foot and Hand Scrub

Pregnancy-Safe Skincare:  True Botanicals Pregnancy Line

Fish Oil Supplement: Carlson The Very Finest Fish Oil Lemon or Nordic Naturals Omega-3 Gummies

Prenatal Body Wash: Earth Mama's refreshing ginger-laced Morning Wellness Body Wash

**Note: While most of my personal care/toiletry collection is full of natural, safe and non-toxic products, I’m a firm believer in balance and I’ve found that natural living doesn’t have to be all or nothing in order to have a profound impact, both on your health and the environment. And so there are a few traditional products that I’ve gone back to, even though they're not the “greenest” or “cleanest”. My goal is to reduce my toxic load where I can, not be perfect.
