Root + Revel

My Current Green Beauty Routine

As a green blogger, I am constantly testing out new products and trying new things. BUT, there are certain products I go back to again and again, products that withstand the test of time because they just work. To wit, here are the products that are currently part of my green beauty routine, as of November 2018.

In this inspiring interview, Kate Kordsmeier (founder of Root + Revel) shares how she healed her body naturally with food (the anti-inflammatory diet and the 80-20 rule) and holistic remedies, including her favorite healthy products, daily routine and best tips and tricks for combatting PCOS, Thyroid + Gut issues.

Face WashSuki Exfoliate Foaming Cleanser is such a fun treat, but for everyday cleansing I useAcure Organics Sensitive Cleanser or Andalou Naturals Coconut Water Firming Cleanser

I typically use these in the shower, but prefer to use oils and balms at night before bed. See below:

Oil Cleansers: I am absolutely addicted to Leahlani’s Pamplemousse Tropical Enzyme Cleansing Oil. It smells INCREDIBLE, gets off all my makeup, while gently exfoliating and brightening my skin.

If I feel like mixing it up, I swap between that and Beautycounter’s Cleansing BalmGoop by Juice Beauty’s Melting Cleanser and Kindred Skincare Blemish Cleanse

Sometimes if I’m feeling lazy, I’ll either use these makeup remover wipes or just this amazing microfiber cloth that removes every last trace of makeup with just water.

Makeup Remover: I use my DIY Makeup Remover every day to remove eye makeup.

Toner: True Botanicals Clear Nutrient Toner is gentle and effective, but for something a bit stronger I’ve been loving REN Skincare’s Ready Steady Glow Daily AHA Tonic–it’s really helped lighten my acne scars and brighten my skin. I always circle back to my DIY Toner, too!

And for quick pick-me-up spritzes throughout the day, I love Leahlani’s Citrus & Citrine Toning Mist. So light and refreshing and it smells AMAZING!

Moisturizer: These days I’m switching between True Botanicals Clear Pure Radiance Oil in the AM and Leahlani Siren Serum at night. But I also mix in AnnMarie Skincare Herbal Facial Oil for Oily Skin and Kindred Skincare Nightly Nourish every now and then too. I find keeping my skin guessing a bit helps keep it clear and happy.

Facial Scrub: For the best natural alternative to St. Ive’s Apricot Scrub, I love Acure Organics Brightening Facial Scrub, but it can be a little harsh. AnnMarie Skincare’s Kaolin Micro Exfoliant is my go-to for gentle manual exfoliation.

I also love using this exfoliating mitt to scrub my body and face a few times a week–it’s super gentle, makes my skin beyond smooth, and doesn’t require any expensive products.

Facial Serum:  #1 hands down is True Botanicals Clear Cellular Repair Serum (I mix in the Vitamin C Booster at night). Nothing got rid of my acne and scarring like this combo!

I also love AnnMarie Skincare Citrus Stem Cell Serum and their new Probiotic Serum. Their anti-aging serum also gets mixed in every now and then!

Face Mask: cocokind organic Ultra Chlorophyll Mask or Beautycounter’s No. 3 Balancing Charcoal Facial Mask are in constant rotation.

My latest obsession though is Leahlani’s Honey Love Exfoliator. I use it more like a mask, just 5-10 minutes, and my skin is so soft afterwards!

Exfoliating Treatment:  Goop By Juice Beauty’s Instant Facial and True Botanicals Resurfacing Moisture Mask

Spot Treatment: Indie Lee Blemish Stick or Turmeric Vicco Paste (though be careful, it will stain your sheets!)

Avoid toxic chemicals and save money with this super quick and easy DIY Homemade Toner. With just 3 ingredients you can soothe, clean and refresh your skin.

Concealer: Hynt Duet Perfecting Concealer (I apply it with this beauty blender sponge)Beautycounter’s Concealer Pen (I also love RMS’ uncover up)

Tinted Moisturizer: Beautycounter Dew Skin Moisturizing Coverage SPF20 or Mineral Fusion Illuminating Beauty Balm SPF 9

Foundation: Beautycounter’s Tint Skin Foundation or Vapour Atmosphere Luminous Foundation Stick (this goes on so smooth and covers like a boss!)

Pressed Powder: Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Dim Light** gives the most perfect glow with just enough coverage.

Bronzer: Beautycounter’s Bronzer for a more done-up look or Inika Organics Baked Mineral Bronzer when I’m just looking for a slight glow during the day.

Blush: Inika Organics Mineral Blush Puff Pot in Rosy Glow or Vapour Aura Multi-Use Cream Blush Stick–I have it in 3 shades (Eros, Enchant and Rose) and rotate through them all depending on my mood!

Highlighter: Vapour Beauty Winter Solstice Collection has the Halo Illuminator in 24K and it is so beautifully golden and glowy!

Eye Shadow: I rotate between 100% Pure in Satin Cream and Vapour Mesmerize Cream Eye Stick in Sugar for everyday super subtle look that just brightens or RMS Beauty Eye Polish in Magnetic for more of a smoky eye.

Eyeliner: Hynt Forte High Definition Eye Liner in Brown

Mascara: Inika Organics Vegan Mascara

Eyebrow Definer: Plume Nourish & Define Brow Pomade

Lip Gloss: Currently addicted to Vapour’s Velvet Gloss in Lavish, a long-lasting ripe plum. I also love Crunchi’s Lip Gloss in Date Night.

Lipstick: I alternate between Beautycounter’s Lip Sheer in Plum, Stowaway Cosmetics Creme Lip Stick in Muted Plum, and Mineral Fusion’s Sheer Moisture Lip Tint in Adorn (this is the perfect natural alternative to Clinique’s Black Honey).

Actually, pretty much anything from Mineral Fusion–their lipstick in Alluring is a current fave, and I love their Lipstick Butter in Blackberry for a darker lip.

**Note: While most of my personal care/toiletry collection is full of natural, safe and non-toxic products, I’m a firm believer in balance and I’ve found that natural living doesn’t have to be all or nothing in order to have a profound impact, both on your health and the environment. And so there are a few traditional products that I’ve gone back to, even though they’re not the “greenest” or “cleanest”. My goal is to reduce my toxic load where I can, not be perfect.
