Ingredients Matter
Green beauty skincare and sun care products usually have fewer harmful ingredients than most other skincare brands. When you’re looking for a beauty product, the first place you should look is the list of ingredients on the back of the bottle. Make sure to take a close look at what ingredients are listed and avoid products with any common irritants or sensitive skin triggers, like alcohol, fragrances, sulfates, and parabens. These ingredients often don’t need to be listed on the label as they were previously considered “safe” because they were deemed as inactive. However, it has been found that these ingredients can lead to irritation or allergic reactions in susceptible individuals due to their properties such as drying out your skin or irritating your eyes.
Understanding the ingredients
One of the biggest misconceptions about green beauty is that "green" or "organic" means a product is safe for you. But that’s not always the case. Just because a product claims to be organic doesn't mean it’s good for you. It's important to take a look at the ingredients in your products, which are often listed on the back of the label.
The Environmental Working Group (EWG) has put together an easy-to-use guide that rates the safety of certain ingredients in beauty products on a scale from 1-10 with 10 being most hazardous. Though some products may have one or two harmful ingredients, they may also have many beneficial ones as well. So don’t automatically rule out any product just because it has a poor rating on EWG's list. In order to make sure you're getting what you pay for, read labels carefully and look at other reviews online before making your purchase decision.
What to look for in skincare products
Do you know what ingredients to look for and avoid in skin care products? In general, there are three things to consider:
What is the pH of the product?
How many natural ingredients does it contain?
What are the preservatives?
Protecting Your Skin From The Sun
Sunscreen is an important part of any skin care routine. It’s the only way to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays. Sun damage can cause things like wrinkles and age spots, not to mention give you a higher risk for skin cancer. But not all sunscreens are created equal. Some may contain harsh ingredients that will damage your skin in the long run.
Here are some tips to find a sunscreen that won't negatively affect your skin:
-Know what ingredients matter most when it comes to protecting your skin from sun damage
-Use sunscreen that is broad spectrum
-Apply sunscreen at least 20 minutes before you go outside
-Make sure to reapply every two hours or more often if you get wet or sweat
-Choose products made with natural, healthy ingredients
