Like many of you, I’m constantly searching for ways to have youthful, glowing and problem free skin. I don't know about you, but the horror stories I've heard about long term steroid use has me never wanting to touch the stuff again! That said, I have tried the occasional dermatological treatments but the results have been mediocre.

I'm always on the hunt for natural ways to combat health concerns and one that I'm learning more and more about is the use of CBD in skincare.

For years, CBD has been one of the buzzwords in the global healthcare industry. CBD can be found in just about anythings and with all the positive benefits it's definitely not just a trend!

So, that said, are there CBD Oil Benefits for Skin? Is making yourself a little homemade CBD salve worth it?

Read on to find out!

What is CBD Oil?

Let's start by explaining exactly what CBD is…

CBD oil is a natural, plant-based supplement with medicinal properties. You can extract it from the hemp plant and contains high concentrations of cannabidiol (CBD). CBD is the non-intoxicating component of the cannabis plant. While the CBD oil itself is non-intoxicating, it is often blended with other compounds, such as terpenes, to create a variety of effects.

This oil has become increasingly popular as a way to manage a variety of ailments with it's potential anti-inflammatory, anti-anxiety, and anti-seizure effects. You can use it to treat a variety of conditions, including chronic pain, anxiety, depression, and seizures. You may also be able to use it to help reduce the side effects of chemotherapy. It's frequently studied for its potential to help reduce pain and anxiety, improve sleep, and alleviate muscle aches + soreness.

Not bad for one little oil, huh!?

How do you Take CBD Oil?

CBD oil can be taken in a variety of forms, including tinctures, capsules, edibles, and cannabis salves. It's important to note that CBD oil is not the same thing as marijuana, as it does not contain the same levels of THC (the psychoactive component of cannabis).

Although CBD oil is considered to be safe and well-tolerated, it can still interact with medications so it's important to talk to your doctor before using it. Physicians can help you determine the right dosage for your needs and make sure that it does not interact with any prescription medications that you're taking.

Can CBD Be Absorbed Through The Skin?

Yes! CBD can be absorbed through your skin or hair follicles and interact with CBD receptors in the endo-cannabinoid system! (source) May people find relief from joint pain with regular use of CBD salves!

What Can CBD Do For Your Skin?

There is some suggestion that topical application of CBD may be helpful for some skin disorders, such as eczema, psoriasis, pruritis, and inflammatory skin conditions (source). By adding it to your natural skincare routine, avoiding toxic skincare ingredients, you may see the positive effects on the following conditions.

CBD is getting more attention for acne treatment! It's proving to be a notable option, especially because of its supposed anti-inflammatory properties.

Conventional acne therapies include the use of topical retinoids and bactericidal agents. It's also common to see oral antibiotics, hormone therapies and similar medicines prescribed. This may increases your risk of antibiotic resistance or hormonal imbalances.

Not with CBD! In one study, the authors note that CBD has the potential to reduce the expression of anti-inflammatory cytokines, in acne-like conditions. And, it's well-tolerated, making it generally safe. Meanwhile, the anti-inflammatory benefits of CBD have also been explored in other conditions, such as cancer and immunological disorders.

Another skincare condition wherein CBD shows potential is eczema. It’s believed to soothe the condition by combating inflammation and irritation, which are commonly associated symptoms of eczema.

Like in the case of acne, the anti-inflammatory properties of CBD are the reasons for its promise in soothing eczema. It might be effective in the treatment of dryness and itching, which are some things common in people with eczema!

More and more research is being done in regrards to CBD and psoriasis and it look promising!

CBD binds to the receptors that are part of the human cannabinoid system. These are the ones that are responsible for pain and inflammation which is what makes it promising in terms of psoriasis relief.

In another study it was noted that CBD ointment can be an effective non-invasive treatment for improving the quality of life of people with skin disorders, especially those that are caused by inflammation.

The best thing is that no adverse effects were observed!

One of the newest benefits of CBD that researchers are exploring is its ability to reduce inflammation resulting from sunburns. Among others, one of the reasons for such potential is the antibacterial properties of CBD.

Extreme sunburns can make your skin vulnerable to infection, and in such a case, CBD can be potentially beneficial.

CBD for sunburn care is promising! It has the potential to be a regenerative agent, which can improve the healing of your skin after being burnt. Hence, it has the potential to reduce UV-B skin damage!

Where to Buy CBD Oil?

This is a tricky one and is hard for me to give one easy answer! It really depends on where you live and what regulations are in place when it comes to marijuana. If it's legal to purchase in your area, your can often buy CBD oil online or at your local cannabis shop. I find the patrons at these shops so knowledgeable and super helpful!

What Ingredients To Choose For Your Cannabis Salve

Cannabis salves can be made with a wide range of ingredients, so the ones you choose will really depend on your preference.

Here are a few ideas to get you started:

Beeswax is a very popular choice when it comes to making salves as it can contribute to a nice thick consistency. It's a great source of vitamins and minerals such as vitamin A, which helps to soothe and nourish the skin. It also contains vitamin E. It's known for its anti-aging properties. And vitamin B6, which helps to reduce signs of aging. Beeswax also contains essential fatty acids, which can help to protect the skin from environmental stressors, such as pollution.

Sweet Almond Oil

Sweet almond oil is one of my personal favorites for natural skin care products. It's light and non-greasy texture is quickly absorbed by the skin and is suitable for all skin types. It is rich in vitamins A, B, and E, which helps to nourish and hydrate the skin. It's also a natural source of fatty acids and antioxidants that help to reduce inflammation and protect the skin from environmental damage.

Coconut Oil

Another great choice for making cannabis salve is coconut oil. Coconut oil is an excellent natural moisturizer. It contains natural fatty acids that help retain moisture and nourish the skin. Coconut oil is also a rich source of antioxidants and other nutrients, which provide additional protection against environmental damage and premature aging. Additionally, it has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, making it useful for treating a variety of skin conditions.

Shea Butter

Shea butter is extracted from the nut of the shea tree, and is a natural emollient and humectant. Its high concentration of fatty acids and vitamins makes it an ideal moisturizer for all skin types. It helps protect the skin from environmental damage, and can help reduce the appearance of scars and wrinkles. Shea butter also has anti-inflammatory properties, and can help reduce redness and irritation.

Cocoa Butter

Cocoa butter is an excellent choice for individuals with sensitive skin, as it is hypoallergenic and free of fragrances and other chemical additives. When used as a body moisturizer, cocoa butter helps to protect the skin from the elements, while preventing moisture loss. It can also be used to smooth rough patches on the elbows and heels, and to soothe sunburns and other skin irritations.
