The best organic baby clothes and brands - eco-friendly, too!

I'll be honest–organic and eco-friendly fashion has fallen low on my list of things I have the capacity to care about. It's there, somewhere, lingering in the back of my mind that I should be more conscious of where my clothes come from, what they're made of and how they are sourced and produced.

But for whatever reason, I haven't put in the time to research sustainable fashion the way I have with green beauty and other natural baby products. That was until my son, Jackson, was born.

How could I not care about the quality of the clothing that was going to be touching his perfect, delicate skin? After all, cotton is the world's dirtiest crop and the chemicals and pesticides that are used to grow it can negatively affect the farmers, the environment and my pristine little baby.

Did you know that 99 percent of cotton in the world is grown using chemicals, fertilizers, pesticides, and other inorganic materials? The clothing industry, as a whole, is responsible for 25 percent of the total insecticide use in the world.

And so, while we do still get our fair share of cheap outfits from Target and buybuyBaby (I do like their Burt's Bees Organic line!), Carter's (their Little Planet line is organic) and the like, we've also really put a focus on finding him organic baby clothes from eco-friendly brands we can trust.

To wit, I've rounded up a list of our favorite organic baby clothes to help you other semi-crunchy mamas do the same for your babes.

The Best Organic Baby Clothes: Sapling Organic

Cute patterns, comfy fit, convenient zippers AND made from 100% organic cotton? Sign me up. This adorable Australian-born, US-based line of both baby boy and baby girl clothes were some of my very favorites–these sweet blue pants with the heart on the butt are so stinking cute and their zipped onesies (we have the Fox and Leaf patterns) are a staple in Jackson's wardrobe.

Sapling uses organic water-based dyes that are free from heavy metals and toxic chemicals, plus they're eco-friendly and gentle on your baby's skin, plus their nature-inspired, whimsical prints are style-conscious unlike some other more “earthy” baby clothes in the organic category.

Saks sells some of Sapling's line, or you can buy direct on their website. Use the code ROOTANDREVEL15 for 15% off your purchase!

The Best Organic Baby Clothes: Baby Mori

If you're looking for organic baby clothes that are unbelievably soft and cozy in cute hipster prints, Baby Mori is for you!

Crafted from organic cotton and bamboo, these baby clothes literally feel softer than silk and are breathable and thermoregulating. They're also sustainably sourced and produced in trusted factories, ensuring fair and safe working conditions are always in place.

I L-O-V-E their Kindness Project, too! When you return your pre-loved MORI products, the brand passes them on to Little Village, a London-based charity that gives families in need a helping hand.

We have a bunch of their zipper onesies (the little pockets are adorable and I love the foldover mittens), some cozy t-shirts (pictured on Jackie here) and I love their towels and bath mitts, too!

The Tot sells some of their sets, or you can buy direct on their website.

The Best Organic Baby Clothes: Oliver & Rain

I was so excited when I found a local Atlanta company making adorable organic baby clothes–Oliver & Rain is sustainable, stylish and with the cutest designs, like this “The Snuggle is Real” onesie on Jackson.

I love how they use natural colors that are soft and easy on the eye and playful prints (their puppy print is my fave!) with fluid lines that reflect the flow and movement of the earth. Plus, they're made from 100% organic cotton

I love their terry cloth Kimono rompers, and their muslin swaddles were perfect when Jackson was itty bitty and we still swaddled him to sleep.

You can buy Oliver & Rain on Zulily or direct on their websiteuse the code HAPPYEARTH to receive 20% off your order!

The Best Organic Baby Clothes: Hope & Henry

Who says little boy clothes aren't as cute as little girls'? Oh my goodness, when my package from Hope & Henry arrived my heart exploded. I love dressing Jackson like a little man and this brand makes the absolute cutest button-down shirts and chambray, handsome sweaters and jackets, structured chinos and playful knits and bathing suits (and they've got gorgeous girl clothes, too!).

In addition to being made from raw cotton that's farmed organically, I love how sturdy their baby clothes are–they really hold up to being well worn, well loved, and handed down again and again.

Even better? They're super affordable. Because they utilize technology that eliminates spending on corporate offices, large warehouses, and distribution centers, expect the prices to be well below what you're used to for this quality!

And you can feel good about supporting this brand–although the fashion industry is notorious for paying low wages to factory workers, Hope & Henry works to reduce poverty by sharing profits with the factory workers.

The Best Organic Baby Clothes: Pact Organic

How many baby clothing brands can claim The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) Certification? The answer: not many.

But Pact Organic is! Their organic cotton uses up to 95% less water than conventional cotton during the wash phase and doesn’t contain the harsh chemicals, bleaches or dyes that conventional cotton uses. AND they're Fair Trade Certified.

This line, which goes from newborn to age 12 (and they also have adult sizes!), is super thick, durable 100% organic cotton and is the perfect wardrobe base for all of your basic clothing needs (mostly solid colors and simple, timeless styles).

The words 'Pact Organic' stamped on the bottom of a baby's onesie foot.

And somehow, prices start at just $6. WHAAAAA? Yeah, go stock up now! Might I recommend their footie sleeper (shown here on Jackson, or their cozy long-sleeve bodysuits and reversible beanie hats!

Buy Pact direct on their website.

The Best Organic Baby Clothes: Colored Organics

Ever wondered about the difference between organic cotton and conventional? Colored Organics lays it all out for you on their website, all the way from seed prep to retail pricing. What you need to know:

Organic cotton is grown naturally and sustainably, without herbicides, pesticides or any other harmful chemicals. These safe farming methods preserve the soil, conserve energy, and help to protect the health of the people and animals in the community where the cotton is grown. They take it a step further and ensure all accessories, dyes, and other inputs must meet certain environmental and toxicological criteria.

Naturally, I love this line of super soft knits–their kimono bodysuits are a fave (shown on Jackie here), as are their cozy sleepers and yummy pullovers and angelic knotted hats. The prints are subtle and classic, and the colors are muted and timeless.

One of the most ethical baby clothing brands, Colored Organics is 100% sweatshop-free, made in GOTS certified factories by adults only, who are paid above-standard wages and have working hour caps so they can actually spend time with their families.

Buy on Bonanza or direct through their website.

The Best Organic Baby Clothes: Hanna Andersson

Legendary for softness and durability and made from organic cotton, Hanna Andersson's baby clothes nurture kid's sensitive skin with supersoft purity, while caring for farmers and our earth with non- toxic ecosystems. In fact, most hannas are certified STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX®, which means they’re tested down to the very last strand of thread for over 100 harmful substances using strict European certification standards.

One of my favorite snuggly outfits of Jack's in his first weeks of life was this super soft Little Sleeper With Feet (shown above), which is made with Organic Peruvian pima cotton and has Foldover sleeve cuffs. These days, I love layering his look with this cozy knit hooded cardigan (shown below), because really…what's cuter than a baby in a hood?

Though this line is a bit more expensive than some others on the list, they often have good sales and promotions, so watch for those to snag a good deal!

Buy on ThredUP or direct through their website.

The Best Organic Baby Clothes: aden + anais

A neutral baby nursery with a crib, blanket ladder, shag rug, gold mobile, and art shelf.

While this incredibly chic brand isn't your traditional baby clothes, I felt it important to mention as they still create products your baby will wear, including the prettiest muslin swaddles (as pictured above), blankets (serengeti is shown above), bibs (by far the most absorbent of any brand we've tried), hooded towels and even disposable diapers that are so soft you'll wish they came in adult size, ha! 😉

While not organic, the breathability, softness, versatility and durability of their muslin is unmatched AND you can rest assured their line will safely make your baby comfortable. Muslin is a gentle yet durable and breathable fabric, meaning it reduces the risk of overheating and has a perfect amount of stretchiness. Their diapers are also hypoallergenic and free from harsh chemicals, fragrances, lotions, latex and chlorine. Plus I just love their modern aesthetic! Cute without being overly babyish.

Buy aden + anais direct or at a variety of stores including Saks, Dillard's, and even Amazon.

The Best Organic Baby Clothes: iPlay/Green Sprouts

From hats to bodysuits, blankets to footies, this bright and sunny line of organic baby clothes is great for basics!

Their organic Cotton is grown without the use of toxic, synthetic chemicals, while their colors are made with azo-free dyes. Everything they make is breathable, and I love that some items, like their yoga pants, are even made with inside-out seams for extra comfort against baby’s delicate skin.

I love their soft, organic muslin washcloths. Then, I keep baby warm post-bath with this organic swaddle that snuggles him while drying.

Everything is super affordable, too, with most of their organic offerings costing below $15. Plus, get 30% off your first order with the code RootAndRevel!

P.S. This adorable gown and hat is the first outfit our sweet Jackie ever wore–we brought him home from the hospital in this outfit so it will always hold a special place in my heart. I have the matching nursing-friendly PJ set and robe and it's so soft and cozy. All are from Everly Grey.
