The best organic baby clothes and brands - eco-friendly, too!

Note: This post has been update in July, 2022 to reflect the latest on organic newborn clothes and organic baby clothes.

We'll be honest–organic and eco-friendly fashion fell low on our list of things we had the capacity to care about before we had kids. Thinking of organic newborn clothes was somewhere, lingering in the back of our minds that we should be more conscious of where our clothes came from, what they're made of and how they are sourced and produced.

But for whatever reason, we didn't put in the time to research sustainable fashion the way we have with green beauty and other natural baby products. Since we've had kids, it's been a whole other story!!!!

How could we not care about the quality of the clothing that was going to be touching their perfect, delicate skin? After all, cotton is the world's dirtiest crop and the chemicals and pesticides that are used to grow it can negatively affect the farmers, the environment and our pristine little babies.

Did you know that 99 percent of cotton in the world is grown using chemicals, fertilizers, pesticides, and other inorganic materials? The clothing industry, as a whole, is responsible for 25 percent of the total insecticide use in the world. That's crazy!

And so, while we do still get our fair share of cheap outfits from Target and buybuyBaby (we do like their Burt's Bees Organic line!), Carter's (their Little Planet line is organic) and the like, we've also really put a focus on finding other organic baby clothes from eco-friendly brands we can trust.

We've rounded up a list of our favorite organic baby clothes to help you other semi-crunchy mamas do the same for your babes.

Crafted from organic cotton and bamboo, these baby clothes literally feel softer than silk and are breathable and thermoregulating. They're also sustainably sourced and produced in trusted factories, ensuring fair and safe working conditions are always in place.

We L-O-V-E their Kindness Project, too! When you return your pre-loved MORI products, the brand passes them on to Little Village, a London-based charity that gives families in need a helping hand.

We have a bunch of their zipper onesies (the little pockets are adorable and we love the foldover mittens), some cozy t-shirts and we love their towels and bath mitts, too!

The Best Organic Baby Clothes: Oliver & Rain

Oliver & Rain is sustainable, stylish and with the cutest designs, like this “The Snuggle is Real”. Cute!!!

We love how they use natural colors that are soft and easy on the eye and playful prints (their puppy print is our fave!) with fluid lines that reflect the flow and movement of the earth. Plus, they're made from 100% organic cotton.

We love their terry cloth Kimono rompers, and their muslin swaddles were perfect when our babes were itty bitty and we still swaddled them to sleep.

The Best Organic Baby Clothes: Hope & Henry

Who says little boy clothes aren't as cute as little girls'? Oh my goodness, when our package from Hope & Henry arrived our hears exploded. We loved dressing our little men in these adorable clothes and this brand makes the absolute cutest button-down shirts and chambray, handsome sweaters and jackets, structured chinos and playful knits and bathing suits (and they've got gorgeous girl clothes, too!).

In addition to being made from raw cotton that's farmed organically, we love how sturdy their baby clothes are–they really hold up to being well worn, well loved, and handed down again and again.

Even better? They're super affordable. Because they utilize technology that eliminates spending on corporate offices, large warehouses, and distribution centers, expect the prices to be well below what you're used to for this quality!

And you can feel good about supporting this brand–although the fashion industry is notorious for paying low wages to factory workers, Hope & Henry works to reduce poverty by sharing profits with the factory workers.

In fact, most are certified STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX®, which means they’re tested down to the very last strand of thread for over 100 harmful substances using strict European certification standards.

One of our favorite snuggly outfits was this super soft Little Sleeper With Feet (shown above), which is made with Organic Peruvian pima cotton and has Foldover sleeve cuffs. These days, we love layering their look with the cozy knit hooded cardigan because really…what's cuter than a baby in a hood?

Though this line is a bit more expensive than some others on the list, they often have good sales and promotions, so watch for those to snag a good deal!

The Best Organic Baby Clothes: aden + anais

A neutral baby nursery with a crib, blanket ladder, shag rug, gold mobile, and art shelf.

While this incredibly chic brand isn't your traditional baby clothes, we felt it important to mention as they still create products your baby will wear, including the prettiest muslin swaddles (as pictured above), blankets (serengeti is shown above), bibs (by far the most absorbent of any brand we've tried), hooded towels and even disposable diapers that are so soft you'll wish they came in adult size. Well, maybe not the diapers. Ha! 😉

While not organic, the breathability, softness, versatility and durability of their muslin is unmatched AND you can rest assured their line will safely make your baby comfortable. Muslin is a gentle yet durable and breathable fabric, meaning it reduces the risk of overheating and has a perfect amount of stretchiness. Their diapers are also hypoallergenic and free from harsh chemicals, fragrances, lotions, latex and chlorine. Plus we just love their modern aesthetic! Cute without being overly babyish.

Why should you choose to buy Organic Newborn Clothes + Organic Baby Clothes?

Baby clothes are a major source of chemical exposure for infants. Many synthetic chemicals are used in the manufacturing process, including flame retardants and waterproofing agents, which can cause health problems that last well into childhood. Some of these chemicals have been shown to interfere with brain development, causing reduced IQ and behavior problems. One of the main concerns with these chemicals is that they can cause allergic reactions and affect children's immune systems.

The chemicals used in making baby cloths are the same as those used in making other clothing, but the level of exposure is often higher. They include formaldehyde, ammonia, acetone, and even pesticides.

Some other common chemicals found in baby clothes include:

1. Phthalates: These are plastic softeners that are used to make plastics more durable. They can also be found in vinyl flooring, shower curtains, and other products. The effects of phthalates on children’s health is still unclear but some studies have shown an association between high levels of phthalates and poor development due to hormone disruption.

2. Flame retardants: These chemical additives are added to furniture and other items to prevent the spread of fire or keep things from burning up quickly when they get hot. They can be toxic if ingested or if they get into your body through your skin or hair follicles.

3. Antibacterial agents: These ingredients help keep fabrics germ-free by killing off bacteria on contact. They can cause a number of health problems including skin irritation, allergic reactions, and eye inflammation.

Baby clothes should be high-quality and safe which is why we highly recommend choosing safe options such as organic cotton or bamboo when baby clothes are concerned.
