GETTING TO KNOW Erin Stutland.
You likely recognize Erin from our recent post about The Best Fun + Motivational Workout Videos. I am obsessed with the way Erin mixes mantras (positive affirmations) with movement to give you a unique workout that will not only make you sweat, but also cleanse stuck energy, transform negative thinking into possibility and tap into strength and confidence like never before.
Her workouts are so much more than just jumping around and having fun together. (Although there’s plenty of that, too!) Her signature “Shrink Session” workouts and “Soul Strolls” have helped over 70,000 people in 155 countries around the world not only create a long, lean body, but also rebuild and recover a deeper emotional and spiritual connection with self.
Sign up and she will show you how to shake to combine dance, HIIT, toning, kickboxing, yoga, and meditation in just 5 MINUTES a day! It’s the perfect way to get moving and get motivated, and I think you will be truly amazed at what 5 minutes can do.
Don't miss it though–the free challenge sign up period ends on October 9, 2017, so sign up now!
Erin is also the host and coach of the new weight-loss transformation TV show Altar’d on Z Living, so suffice it to say, I couldn’t be more excited that she is here with Root + Revel–I know that you’re going to find so many inspiring tips and tricks in this interview!
So let’s get into it; let’s take a peek at what it’s like to spend a day walking in Erin Stutland’s shoes.
WHAT ARE THE FIRST 30 MINUTES OF YOUR DAY LIKE?
I usually take a few minutes to cuddle with my hubs if he hasn't gotten up before me. I just love waking up and seeing his face. It never ceases to make me smile first thing in the morning.
Then, head into the kitchen, make some hot water with lemon, grab my journal and sit and write for about 15-20 minutes while sipping the water. I have been doing the Morning Pages (Julia Cameron's The Artists Way) for almost 20 years. Crazy. But that is my meditation.
Then I head to the bathroom and get in the shower because it helps to wake me up! We will see how this routine changes once baby comes in November. I am sure it will all fly out the window for a while.
SHOWER TIME! WHAT ARE YOUR GO-TO PRODUCTS?
During the winter, I bust out the Shea Butter for my body, because NYC winters can be super drying. I keep it pretty simple. Once I find a product I love, I usually stick to it for many years until it's time to try something new.
WHAT’S YOUR TYPICAL BREAKFAST?
Either oatmeal with fruit (berries mostly), coconut oil, collagen protein powder, flax seed and chia seeds. I will play with flavors like cinnamon or pumpkin spice.
During the warmer months I switch to a yogurt parfait. Since being pregnant, I eat full fat organic regular yogurt (whatever is available at Whole Foods) for the calcium and protein, but when not pregnant, I usually do Anita's coconut yogurt. Then, I usually add all the same things I put in my oatmeal. I guess I prefer a sweeter breakfast to savory. Savory is for brunch!:)
ARE YOU A TEA OR COFFEE DRINKER?
I loooove Teavana English Breakfast black tea with almond milk. Since being pregnant, I took out caffeine. I really miss my morning ritual of a hot tea and looking forward to coming back to it.
Oddly, I have been drinking decaf iced coffee through this pregnancy. Probably because I am HOT all the time. But normally, I am not a coffee drinker. Pregnancy is funny like that!
WHAT’S YOUR EXERCISE ROUTINE?
I am pretty disciplined about moving my body regularly. It's my medicine. It makes me feel better, more productive, more at peace with myself and my body, more creative, more loving.
But I am not strict about what I do. I vary it up from dance, to yoga, spin, sculpting. I do it all. And I always add my mantras to whatever I am doing. Pregnancy has changed what I can do, so lots of prenatal yoga and walking the last few months.
TIME TO GET READY! WHAT ARE YOUR GO-TO BEAUTY AND SKINCARE PRODUCTS?
I just started using an eyebrow gel from the place I get my eyebrows done, which I have to say, really makes a difference in keeping things looking clean. What have I been doing all these years, I don't know why I never used it before. Kind of obsessed.
I haven't found a non toxic eyeliner I love, so still wearing a Maybeline from the drugstore. I really don't like to go out without mascara, and there is a great organic one from Physicians Formula. Beautycounter makes a great one a well that I love. I wish I had long, curled up lashes, but because my lashes are straight, they need some extra love and curling.
Love the Beautycounter lipsticks and gloss. They are very natural and moisturizing. Winter time, I will do a bold colorful red or magenta lip to bring the dark days to life!
Again, not organic or non toxic, but if you like to play with color, check out Rimmel (drug store) moisture lip colors. They are not drying and not expensive. So you can play around and have fun with your colors.
WHAT’S IN YOUR MEDICINE CABINET?
New Chapter Prenatal Vitamins, Solgar magnesium citrate (for regular bowels), Nordic Naturals cod liver oil or a DHA. Then I will take Vitamin C if I am feeling unwell. And will use magnesium gel on my neck and throat if I detect a cold coming on. I used to be a supplement junkie, but have really
And I will use magnesium gel on my neck and throat if I detect a cold coming on. I used to be a supplement junkie, but have really pared down to the essentials. I think if you are taking so many things at once, you don't really know what effects they have. So I like to introduce one thing at a time for now.
I also would rather spend my money on a few high-quality supplements than a bunch of random ones from the health food store.
WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE ON-THE-GO SNACKS?
I love snacks. I could snack all day. I love almonds and raisins. Carrots and hummus. A hard boiled egg sprinkled with salt and pepper.
Trader Joe's Gluten-free toast with almond butter and banana. Apple with almond butter. Trader Joe's gluten free toast with organic cottage cheese and peaches is my current pregnancy obsession. And I drizzle a lil honey to make it just right.
WHAT’S A TYPICAL LUNCH LIKE FOR YOU?
When I get in a groove with a meal, I tend to eat it quite a bit until I get sick of it, then I switch. When in NYC and not traveling, my go to is steamed chopped sweet potato, steamed kale or spinach, 2 cage-free soft boiled eggs, Bubby's sauerkraut, sprinkled with tahini (there is a little shop near me in Brooklyn called Sahadi's that has the BEST tahini!) and salt and pepper. It's got everything you could need in there and keeps you full or a long time!
WHEN YOU’RE GROCERY SHOPPING, WHAT INGREDIENTS DO YOU AVOID ON THE LABEL?
I try to buy mostly fruits and veggies. Then when I go to the inner aisles, I make sure almost everything I buy has 5 or less ingredients on the packaging. There is really no reason to have more than that.
And I want to be able to pronounce them all. Nothing with high fructose corn syrup or trans fats. And if something is going to have straight up sugar in it, it is definitely for the treat stash.

WHAT’S IN YOUR PANTRY?
Quinoa. Oats. Nuts. Raisins. Spices. Oat flour. A few bars to grab on the go [here's our guide to the best healthy protein bars]. Lots of cans of beans, tomatoes, lentil pasta, etc. for putting together fast and easy recipes. I love having a stacked pretty pantry.

DINNER TIME! IF YOU’RE EATING OUT, WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR ON MENUS TO STAY HEALTHY?
My husband makes fun of me because he says he orders for taste and I order for health. And while he still eats really healthy, he usually orders better food than I do! So I am getting better about leaving my comfort zone and trying different things.
But, I do a lot of salads, salmon and we LOVE Mediterranean. So I mostly look for vegetables or fresh fish and nothing with heavy sauces.
WHAT’S ON YOUR NIGHTSTAND?
I try to read fiction before bed because it helps me relax. I love when I am falling asleep and I think about what is going to happen with the characters. I find this a better and more peaceful alternative to thinking about my to do list.
Right now, there are also a bunch of half read baby books on my nightstand. I have such mixed feelings about most of the books, except Ina May's Guide To Childbirth. That book is solid.
All the others can get overwhelming with all the things you should be doing or could do for your baby. I am sort of crossing my fingers we figure it out little by little once this little lady arrives.
BED TIME! WHAT’S YOUR NIGHTLY ROUTINE?
Gosh, again with the pregnancy. Normally, my husband and I like to go to sleep together and it's usually around 11:30/12. We live in Brooklyn and it's hard to go to bed earlier than that for some reason. But with being pregnant, I mean, I have been asleep by
But with being pregnant, I mean, I have been asleep by 10 p.m. some nights while my husband lays next to me playing on his phone. Poor guy. I really miss our nighttime unwinding, cuddles and chats. Cuddling is like virtually impossible with this belly, but hopefully, we can return after baby is born. Again, I think this nighttime routine of any kind will fly out the window for a long while.
DONUTS!!!! There is a place in NY called the Donut Plant with the most insane donuts you ever saw. This is my ultimate treat!
FAVORITE HEALTHY INDULGENCE?
I love smoothies in the warmer weather. Sometimes I will make an almond butter, banana, cacao nibs, and add lots of spinach to balance out the sweetness.
FAVORITE PRODUCT THAT EVERYONE NEEDS TO TRY?
Honestly, that lunch I mentioned above is really darn good and super easy to make. Give your eggs 5 min in boiling water for the perfect soft boiled runny goodness. I think everyone should try this meal at least once. You will thank me for it!
And that’s a wrap. HUGE thanks to Erin Stutland for sharing her story with us.
