With Valentine’s Day around the corner, I can’t think of anything more appropriate than a heart-shaped, chocolate treat that is actually healthy for you!

I mean, who wouldn’t want to receive a little chocolate heart that tastes like a Reeses–only way cleaner, healthier and actually much better tasting–but won’t spike their blood sugar or induce a carb hangover?

Welcome to the magical world of fat bombs, my friends.

What is a fat bomb?

Don’t be scared–you hopefully know by now that fat is good.

I’ve gone on and on and on in the past about why fat is good, not the enemy, nor are calories and how regardless of whether you’re Keto or Paleo or I-eat-what-I-want-when-I-want, fat balls are just a great way to get more good fats into your diet.

We’ll talk a little bit more about the benefits of healthy fats in a moment, but for now, let’s talk about why fat bombs are such a great way to incorporate healthy fats into your diet.

Fat balls, fat bombs, energy bites, call them whatever you like. Essentially, fat bombs are made primarily from–duh!–healthy fats like grass-fed butter, coconut oil, nuts and seeds, often with some add-ins like chocolate, cinnamon or vanilla, and a sugar-free sweetener like stevia or monk fruit. They’re always low in carbs, high in fats and are often sugar-free (I personally always sweeten my with natural sweeteners, if anything).

Fat bombs were initially designed for those following the Ketogenic diet, a super low carb way of eating where you get most of your fuel from fats, which can actually help you burn fat and lose weight.

But now, fat bombs are finding their way into more of the mainstream because they’re just so damn delicious, creamy, satisfying, and decadent, and an awesome way to add more healthy fats to your diet–which we ALL need to thrive.

Plus, these specific Chocolate Peanut Butter Fat Bombs are not only Keto friendly, but gluten-free, dairy-free, Whole30- and Paleo-friendly (just swap the peanut butter for a different nut or seed butter like almond, pecan or sunflower), vegetarian and vegan (just make sure you get a vegan chocolate bar).Sprouts Farmers Market brand. How to Make Chocolate Peanut Butter Fat Bombs

One of the best things about these fat bombs is that they’re crazy easy to make–just six ingredients and 10 minutes, and you’ve got yourself a delicious treat. The hardest part is waiting for them to set in the fridge!

Be sure to pick up your silicone mold of choice–I recommend these heart silicone molds for a festive Valentine’s Day treat.

For the ingredients, I bought everything at Sprouts Farmers Market. I love their store brand of organic products–they’re affordable and high quality, like these organic, Fair Trade 85% dark chocolate bars. (For keto specifically, be sure to use a chocolate bar with zero added sugars.)

With numerous grocery store options these days, I think it’s important to find the rare brands who offer the right balance of selection, quality AND price, and IMHO, Sprouts does an amazing job at delivering that value. Their selection is in line with Whole Foods, but their prices are in line with Kroger.

Plus, they have awesome weekly and monthly deals that save you even more money, AND they have an app where you can add promo codes and digital coupons to your account and then simply scan at checkout to save. Their coupons are super generous and for healthy foods you’d actually want to buy, not just a bunch of junk.

If you’re looking for the closest location, go to the store locator to find a Sprouts near you!

Health Benefits of Chocolate Peanut Butter Fat Bombs

HEALTHY FATS

First of all, obviously, are the fats. Not just any fats though–we’ve talked before about the dangers of vegetable oil, canola oil and other hydrogenated and trans fats.

But heart-healthy fats, like avocados, olive oil, coconut oil, grass-fed butter/ghee, fatty fish, nuts and seeds, are full of omega-3s, lower bad LDL cholesterol and raise good HDL cholesterol, help prevent free radical damage, boost immunity, act as an anti-aging nutrient for your skin, and can actually help protect our hearts.

I know, this is not what the media has lead us to believe. But did you know that not a single study actually links high-fat diets to heart disease? And, in fact, numerous studies have since debunked the myth. (source)

ORGANIC DARK CHOCOLATE

Didn’t know chocolate was good for you? As long as you’re eating pure chocolate or cacao, ideally organic (not processed cocoa powders or milk chocolates with tons of added sugar), then you can indulge, guilt-free!

Here’s some good news about chocolate according to the Harvard School of Public Health:

  • Chocolate is rich in plant chemicals called flavanols that may help to protect the heart, and dark chocolate contains up to 2-3 times more flavanols than milk chocolate.
  • Observational studies suggest a link between high cacao or chocolate intake of 6 grams daily (1-2 small squares) and a reduced risk of heart disease and mortality, possibly in part by reducing blood pressure and inflammation.
  • Chocolate is rich in minerals like iron, copper, magnesium, zinc and phosphorous.

So go ahead–grab a chocolate square (or two)!

ORGANIC STEVIA

When it comes to sugar-free sweeteners, my top pick is usually organic stevia. Why? Because it has zero fructose, zero calories and scores a zero on the GI scale, meaning it’s a natural way to add sweetness without affecting your blood sugar. In fact, it can even reduce fasting blood sugar levels, balance insulin resistance and aid in glucose regulation.

There are also medicinal properties in the plant shown to have truly incredible health benefits (as seen in about 600 different studies!) including its use as a natural cancer treatment, improving cholesterol, lowering blood pressure, supporting weight loss and warding off health problems linked with obesity, like diabetes and metabolic syndrome. (source)

Beware though: not all stevia products are created equal. It’s important to look for 100% pure liquid stevia, ideally organic and alcohol-free without any additives (including other sweeteners that often get mixed in) to know you’re getting the most pure form.

I recommend Sprouts’ Organic Liquid Stevia.

Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup organic, extra-virgin coconut oil
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter (I recommend Wild Friends Peanut Cashew Super Butter; for keto use unsweetened)
  • 3 ounces dark chocolate, broken up into 1-inch pieces (I recommend Sprouts Organic 85% cacao bars; for keto, use chocolate with zero added sugar)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon instant coffee (I recommend Sprouts Organic Decaf)
  • 6 drops organic stevia
Instructions
  1. Over high heat, bring a saucepan with 1-2 cups of water to a boil. Add a glass bowl on top of the saucepan to create a double boiler. Melt the coconut oil and peanut butter in the glass bowl, whisking occasionally to combine.

  2. Add the dark chocolate pieces and continue whisking until completely melted and combined.

  3. Remove from heat and add vanilla, coffee and stevia, whisking to combine.

  4. Carefully pour chocolate mixture into molds of choice--I recommend these heart silicone molds for a festive Valentine's Day treat.

  5. Allow to cool for 30 minutes, then transfer to the fridge and let firm up for at least 3-4 hours (overnight preferred). Serve and enjoy!

Recipe Notes
Keeps in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
Note: you can microwave the coconut oil, peanut butter and dark chocolate to melt if preferred, but it's not as delicate, albeit super convenient.

  1. Saw the chocolate/peanut butter fat bomb recipe in Sprouts Market app and brought me over here. They have posted the directions incorrectly on their site by mixing up steps 3 and 4. I would hope nobody would try to make them that way but since it is attributed to you I thought I would give you a heads up. Making these tomorrow.

  2. I want to make this for my wife! She’ll love it and we can both just devour some chocolate haha thank you, great recipe!

  3. This is my kind of fat bomb! Can never go wrong with the chocolate/peanut butter combo 😀 Having been keto for about 9 months I will definitely be giving this a try. Wish we had a Sprouts here in Charleston SC!
