The Best Supplements for Women

Want to support your health with supplements, but feel overwhelmed by the thousands of choices?

It’s uber confusing to know what supplements are best for you and your unique body. Every company seems to have seductive marketing, promising that you’ll feel like superwoman and all your problems will be solved when you take their proprietary blend. Before you know it, you’re spending hundreds of dollars a month and popping pills every hour… is it all really worth it?

While there’s not a one-size-fits-all approach to health, and ideally we do recommend getting panels with your doctor to see your specific levels of vitamins, minerals, hormones, etc.–there are some supplements that, generally speaking, the experts agree are helpful for most women out there to take on a regular basis to optimize our health.

Of course, like anything that involves our bodies, these suggestions are not meant to be prescriptive and–especially if you have chronic illness or other conditions–definitely work with a health practitioner to get individual medical advice.

With that disclaimer, here are some of our top choices when it comes to the best supplements for women.

What to Look for When Buying Supplements

When choosing a supplement brand, it’s all about quality. A lot of your run-of-the-mill generic supplement brands aren’t all they’re made out to be. Here’s what to look for:

  • Non-GMO. The safety of Genetically Modified Organisms is unknown, so we’re opting to stay out of this experiment as much as possible by looking for non-GMO products.
  • Is it bioavailable? This means the supplement is designed to be easily absorbable by the body (shockingly, a lot of supplements AREN’T bioavailable, so it’s basically like throwing money down the drain).
  • Independent testing for quality and purity. This is to ensure that the product isn’t contaminated with sketchy microbes, heavy metals, or anything else harmful.
  • No synthetic fillers, colorants, weird coating, or overall garbage. We’re taking supplements to improve our health, not to add extra fillers and other unnatural things our bodies don’t need (plus: then the body has the detox these things, which creates EXTRA work for them!). Make sure your supplements are pure.
  • Allergen-friendly. While not a must for everyone, some people require supplements to be free from things like nuts, soy, wheat, dairy, corn, or be vegetarian.
  • Manufactured in the USA. Because why not do our best to support our national economy when we can?

Ridgecrest Herbals hits the mark on all of these points! They make most of their products with their signature Availablend™ Bioavailability Complex, which is a unique combination of herbs individually proven to increase the effectiveness and bioavailability of the rest of the ingredients. B Vitamins

B-vitamins are key for mood, energy level, sex drive, and fertility. To take things up a notch and combine essential B-vitamins with adaptogens, try Ridgecrest Herbals’ Anxiety Free supplement to support your body’s natural ability to create feelings of peace, calm, and overall ‘zen’-iness.

In addition to B-vitamins, their Anxiety Free Stress Relief Complex contains:

  • Ashwagandha, an Ayurvedic adaptogenic herb which may support a number of bodily systems, and often used to promote calm and help promote a healthy immune system
  • L-Theanine, an amino acid found in green tea, that may promote relaxation and help relieve stress
  • Lavender Herb, well-known for its gentle, lovely scent and ability to promote relaxation
  • Passion Flower Herb, which may promote well-being, relaxation, and sleep

In fact, Anxiety-Free won the ‘Remedies Stress Award’ in 2018, and the ‘Best of Supplements’ Award from Better Nutrition in 2016. Give it a try if prolonged levels of stress are throwing your body out of whack and causing you irritability, fatigue, or tension.

Adrenal Fatigue Fighter

If you’re looking for extra adrenal function and energy support, try Ridgecrest Herbals’ Adrenal Fatigue Fighter. It’s made up of ingredients and adaptogens shown to help promote energy, encourage focus and positive mood, and support healthy cortisol levels (all without any stimulants!) like Eleuthero root, Asian Ginseng Root, Schisandra Fruit, Suma root, Astragalus Root, American Ginseng Root, Ashwagandha Root Extract, and Holy Basil Extract.

Collagen

Collagen has incredible benefits: it improves your skin’s appearance, reduces joint pain, helps break down proteins and soothes your gut’s lining (AMAZING for anyone with digestion issues), increases your metabolism, strengthens teeth, nails and hair, helps your body detox AND reduces the appearance of cellulite (source). Whoop whoop!

My favorite brand of collagen is Vital Proteins, which is made from grass-fed, pasture-raised bovine hides. The natural peptides are highly bio-available, digestible and soluble in cold or hot liquids. Plus, one scoop contains nearly 10 grams of protein!

Vitamin D

Vitamin D3 is essential for supporting healthy immune system function, and most women are deficient in Vitamin D, so supplementing is usually recommended (especially in the winter when you’re less likely to get it naturally from the sun). It also plays a unique role in helping to regulate neurotransmitter balance in the brain, influencing your mood and outlook.

We like this one from Amy Myers, which also includes Vitamin K2. Vitamin D facilitates calcium absorption from the GI tract into the bloodstream, while Vitamin K helps transport calcium from the bloodstream into the bone. Together these two vitamins help maintain appropriate calcium skeletal distribution.

Sleep Support

Can’t sleep? Good quality sleep is so important for your health that we highly recommend doing whatever it takes to get some restful shut-eye. In addition to checking out this post on 9 Ways to Naturally Improve Your Sleep, you might want to try Ridgecrest Herbals’ DreamOn™ Zen. These safe and natural herbs tap into the body’s genuine ability to self-calm and relax for effective sleep and overnight mood-enhancing support, helping you wake up refreshed without unwanted side effects.

Thyroid

The thyroid manages a number of functions in the body, and it is a crucial gland that tends to get overlooked. The thyroid helps regulate your metabolism, balance your hormones, improve mood and energy, and support associated glands.

Ridgecrest Herbals’ award-winning Thyroid Thrive™ has been designed to naturally support thyroid function, filled with herbs and minerals like kelp, burdock root, ashwagandha, suma root, and more.

Magnesium

Magnesium Buffered Chelate is one of the best absorbed forms of magnesium, and bonus points, the chelate formulation means it shouldn’t cause any of the unfavorable gastrointestinal symptoms associated with other magnesium supplementation.

Magnesium supports healthy cortisol regulation, can help promote relaxation and deep sleep, provide support for healthy thyroid function, and help your body make important hormones like progesterone, estrogen, and testosterone.

Probiotics

We’ve taken countless different probiotics over the years, but gotta say that we’ve been super impressed with Seed’s Daily Synbiotic that’s actually backed by science (a synbiotic is a combination of probiotics and prebiotics–prebiotics are a special form of dietary fiber that act as a fertilizer for the good bacteria in your gut).

Their probiotic combines 24 DNA verified, human-based, naturally-occurring probiotic bacterial strains with a prebiotic and a strong capsule. (Psst… go here to use the code ROOTANDREVEL to get 15% off the first month of Seed’s Daily Synbiotic probiotic + prebiotic subscription!) They get extra accolades because no refrigeration required, making it easier to travel.

Liver Support

You don’t tend to hear as much about liver support when it comes to supplements, but the liver acts as one of the primary lines of defense in your body. Both a gland and an organ, it’s vital to the body’s metabolic, detoxification, and immune system functions.

It breaks down, processes, and removes toxins like alcohol, chemicals, and heavy metals, detoxes excess estrogen, and generally bears the brunt to help us live healthily in a toxic world. Ridgecrest Herbals’ LiverClean helps support liver, gallbladder, pancreas, and spleen health, as well as healthy bile–so definitely check it out for regular use, or add it into your regimen when you know you’ll be indulging in extra festivities (like on vacation or during your wedding week and honeymoon where you’ll be sure to have a few extra glasses of champagne!).

Turmeric

Turmeric is widely known to help reduce inflammation, promote joint mobility, and support brain, heart, and digestive health. Our favorite brand is Truvani–the first ever USDA certified organic, glyphosate residue-free turmeric supplements. They’re non-GMO, vegan, cruelty-free and regularly tested for heavy metals and other contaminants. Pretty much the best turmeric supplement on the market!

Fish oil

In recent years, we’ve heard a ton about the importance of Omega-3s. Research shows that the essential fatty acids EPA & DHA in fish oil support heart, brain, eye, and immune health, and may also help support a healthy mood. Nordic Naturals’ Ultimate Omega is formulated from sustainable, wild-caught fish in a form that’s optimal for absorption (and with its lemon flavor, won’t leave you with icky fish burps).
