Who says you can only enjoy your backyard in the Summer? This past Fall, we had so much fun in our new patio space, complete with farmhouse dining, a cozy fire pit and a chic sectional.
And we’ve continued gathering with friends around the firepit as the weather has gotten chillier this Winter. Our patio is actually one of my favorite places to hang out!
It’s hard to believe that this gorgeous oasis once looked like this:
Yep! Our backyard was once just a giant mud pit–we’ve got these gorgeous old oak trees that provide so much shade that it’s damn near impossible to grow grass. Couple that with a rambunctious Border Collie who uses our yard like her personal obstacle course and it was essentially just a giant mud pit. When it rained, oh God, it/she/our house was so miserably filthy!
Not to mention unusable. This was a big problem, as spending time outdoors, in the fresh air with plants and nature all around you has so many health benefits for your mind, body, and soul.
So it was so important to me to create a green, serene outdoor space using natural materials, like living walls, natural woods and stones, and cozy, durable furniture.
So the first step to fixing up the yard was installing a patio. We wanted something inexpensive, easy to maintain and natural looking, so we decided on slate chips.
Of course, we could’ve done this project ourselves, as it only required creating a flat surface and border wall and raking chips on top. However, I was 9 months pregnant, and Matt fresh off taking the CFA exam, so…ain’t nobody got time for that.
We hired a local landscaping company and within a couple of days, we had a gorgeous slate patio to use as a foundation for the space. We also had them plant half a dozen Clematis vines along our fence with the hope that come Spring they will create a beautiful living wall and surround us with aromatic greenery.
Next up? Furnishing the patio. I was so thrilled when Article approached me about partnering for this project. They had recently expanded their outdoor collection, which includes their first ever range of outdoor sofas, and I had been eyeing several pieces for our patio.
I love that their outdoor furniture is relaxed, yet modern; chic, yet with a bohemian vibe. Plus because they have no showrooms or salespeople, you can get high-quality furniture at SIGNIFICANTLY lower (and much fairer) prices than you would at a typical furniture retailer, all delivered direct to your doorstep.
Like any good foodie, I knew that having a dedicated dining space on the patio was TOP priority. And when I laid my eyes on Article’s Tavola Driftwood Table, I fell immediately in love!
It’s the perfect dinner party table, topped with naturally water-resistant Certified Teak with no chemical sealants. The character and grain of the wood is so unique, with a distinctive timeworn look, offset by the modern aluminum legs.
We drew on the modern, yet classic style of the table with the chairs we paired with it–a metal cafe chair reminiscent of French bistros and the perfect complement to our dining space.
Another amazing find from Article–this sectional. Though it’s not technically on our patio (although we’ve since moved it down to create 3 unique spaces), it completes our outdoor oasis.
Made from Solid Acacia wood and durable wicker, this low-profile couch-chaise combo makes for the ideal reading/lounging/wine drinking nook on a sunny day.
Next up: a cozy fire pit. We toyed with the idea of doing something more official, like a built-in firepit. But because this was all new to us, we wanted to make sure we’d actually use it before we dropped the big bucks.
No outdoor space would be complete without twinkling string lights–these cafe lights are from Amazon and they give the space the most magical, dreamy and romantic feeling when dusk hits.
Backyard Patio Design: Cost
I do want to take a second to talk about cost. I’m a firm believer in splurging on certain pieces (usually those that are large furniture items and/or something you want to last a lifetime, like this dining table) and saving on others (you’ll see a lot of the accessories in our backyard come from Wayfair, Target and affordable brands on Amazon).
Another way I’m able to save–I buy discounted gift cards and always use coupon codes. Whenever I have a purchase over $100, I go to sites like Cardpool.com and Raise.com and am able to save an additional 5-20% on my purchase, even after applying coupon codes.
To get the best promo codes and cash back savings or frequent flier points, I almost never shop without using Retailmenot.com, Ebates.com, Joinhoney.com, CouponCabin.com, EVReward.com or ChaseUltimateRewards.com. I love using the Chrome extensions these companies offer, so that coupon codes are automatically applied at checkout.
